Cincy can keep it close
Nashville SC are the MLS 2026 leaders with 49 points from 21 games while FC Cincinnati are 12th with 31 points from the same number of matches and that points gap tells you all you need to know about the gap in class between the two teams. But the visitors are going to make the hosts work for their win at Geodis Park on Sunday as the numbers are a little misleading.
Nashville's last two results were a 1-0 away win at New York Red Bulls and a 3-2 home win over Columbus Crew, both of which look good on paper but are not particularly spectacular in terms of performance.
FC Cincinnati's last two games were a 2-1 home win over New York City FC and a 1-1 home draw with Seattle Sounders, so they also look good on paper and were decent results in reality. But they were not spectacular in any sense.
Nashville are not an easy team to watch
The two numbers men in these teams are worth a mention as Sam Surridge has 12 goals in 15 appearances for the Boys in Gold and Evander Ferreira has 13 in 20 for The Orange and Blue. Surridge's record makes him the likely top scorer on Sunday and Ferreira has four goals in his last five appearances so he will be the livewire in the visitors' attack.
BJ Callaghan's Nashville set up in a numbers-heavy 4-2-2-2 system with high pressing and a lot of rotation in the centre of the field. They like to dominate possession and move the ball quickly when they win it back and Cincinnati will have to be on top of their game to stop that happening.
Pat Noonan has Cincinnati set up in a more pragmatic 3-5-2 system, pressing selectively and using the wide areas to stretch the game when they have the ball, while also being a threat on the break when the opposition commits players forward.
Home advantage should tell
Nashville should have enough quality and momentum to get the better of Cincinnati in this clash, but we will take the better odds available on the draw at 4.1 because this fixture is likely to be cagey with the hosts dominating possession but the visitors coming back on the counter.
The home side are the stronger outfit and have an excellent home record this season, so we're going for a Nashville win but under 2.5 goals at 2.6 looks the sharpest angle if Cincinnati can keep it tight enough.
