The Loons were beaten 2-0 away to Sporting Kansas City a fortnight ago, before grinding out a 0-0 draw at home to Vancouver Whitecaps last weekend - a sequence that pretty much reflects their struggles this term. San Diego’s possession game meets Minnesota’s transition game
Mikey Varas' team are a possession team, trying to pin opponents back and overwhelm teams with some wide overloads and a patient build-up. Marcus Ingvartsen, with 11 goals in 16 MLS 2026 matches, is their most dangerous player and the one Minnesota need to keep quiet.
Cameron Knowles has set his side up in more of a balanced system that allows for a transition game, with set pieces and counter attacks doing much of the work. They should be able to disrupt San Diego's game flow if the visitors push up too hard.
