- Portland Timbers have scored 11 goals in 4 home matches in all competitions (2.75 per game average).
- Seattle Sounders have lost five consecutive games (D0, L5).
- Seattle Sounders have conceded six goals in four away matches in all competitions (1.5 average).
Seattle’s confidence is shot
Portland Timbers have won four, drawn two and lost four of their last 10 games in all competitions (W4, D2, L4) and look the more likely winner of this derby, but Seattle still have enough quality to trouble the hosts in a game that could go either way.
David Da Costa has been the playmaker behind Portland's goals in MLS 2026, creating three of the last ten (3x A), and they will need him to do it again this weekend when they host a Seattle side who are in freefall.
Marti Cifuentes was appointed as Portland's head coach on 21 July 2026 and has made them a very different proposition to the previous regime, which relied on long-ball for the big forwards. Portland's new style of play is a much more compact back four and pressing unit, which hits teams on the counter attack and can be very destructive when they have the ball.
A derby day classic in the making
Seattle still run through the same 4-2-3-1 structure, with possession, rotation and quick tempo designed to pull teams out of shape. However, their recent run of five defeats in a row is taking its toll on confidence.
The visitors have won only three of their last 10 matches in all competitions (D2, L5) and their away form is particularly concerning for this game, as they have lost three and drawn one of their four away fixtures so far (L3, D1).
Their two most recent games have both been away games, a 3-0 defeat to Austin FC and a 1-0 loss at the hands of Philadelphia Union. Those results may seem similar, but the two games were entirely different, with the first a heavy defeat by a much better team and the second a dogged display against a mediocre opponent.
Portland can get the better of Seattle
The Timbers' recent form of one win, two draws and two defeats in their last five (W1, D2, L2) looks just as bad, but they have enough about them to suggest they can be a threat to Seattle at Providence Park. Portland have won two, drawn one and lost one of their four home games in all competitions (W2, D1, L1) and they have plenty of goal threat.
Kevin Kelsy is the danger man, with eight goals in 16 appearances in MLS 2026 and four of Portland's last 10 goals. Over 2.5 goals at 12/25 and both teams to score at 2/5 look the value bets in this derby, which is sure to be open and entertaining. Portland are the more attractive side at 7/5, but the odds are too short for them to be considered anything other than a speculative punt, which is why we're avoiding the home win at this stage.
