No home for the brave in Oregon
Portland Timbers are the likelier winner when they face Seattle Sounders in the MLS 2026 at Providence Park, USA, on Sunday but the visitors remain a serious threat and should not be underestimated.
Marti Cifuentes took over as Portland head coach on 21 July 2026 and has brought a more compact, compact back four, vertical counter-attacking game and high-pressing style to the side. They are still vulnerable to the odd game when it doesn't come together, but have enough of an edge to win this derby with the visitors struggling.
Seattle are winless in five matches - with five defeats - and the losing habit has to be stopping the confidence and momentum of a club.
The Sounders' recent results are their worst recent spell and have been all over the place, including a 3-0 defeat to Austin FC and a 1-0 loss to Philadelphia Union.
Seattle’s road record a red flag
Portland's form has also been a bit of a roller-coaster with one win, two draws and two defeats in their last five matches, but they have scored 11 goals in four home games in all competitions - an average of 2.75 per match - and have the attacking spark to hurt Seattle.
Portland's record of 2-1-1 at home is not great, but Seattle have not been good on the road this season with three losses in four trips - including their two most recent away games, a 3-0 defeat to Austin FC and 1-0 loss to Philadelphia Union.
Seattle, who play a 4-2-3-1 formation with the ball, still look to dominate possession and turn teams over with tempo and rotation, but that will only work if they don't get pulled out of shape by Portland's counter-attacking style.
Seattle may be stretched
