Iran to maintain strong home form
Iran are strong favorites at 1.93 to defeat New Zealand in Tuesday's FIFA World Cup, Group G 2026 fixture. The Kiwis are the clear minnows in this Group and they are just 4.44 to cause an upset and beat the Iranian side.
It would be foolhardy to take them at those odds after they have failed to win any of their last three away games, losing three times and most recently being trounced 4-0 by Haiti just two days ago. New Zealander Darren Bazeley has brought some energy and organisation to the squad, but he has yet to deliver any away wins for his side.
New Zealand's only win in their last 10 games in all competitions came when they thrashed Chile 4-1 at home, but they were beaten 4-0 just two days ago on a visit to Haiti and this matchup looks no easier.
Kiwis to be outmatched
Iran have won six of their last 10 in all competitions, losing the other four, so their form isn't perfect, but they have won their last three matches, including a 5-0 win over Costa Rica at home and a 2-0 win over Mali in last month's Friendly International Matches 2026.
- Amir Ghalenoei has done a great job as Iran's head coach since taking over in March 2023, fashioning a compact, low-risk side that can keep the game tight and pounce on the transitions by exploiting a few key players in attack.
- Mehdi Taremi, who has scored two of their four goals in this run, is a proven finisher and one of the reasons why Iran are favorites for this matchup.
Goal-shy travellers unlikely to be effective
Tactical outlook
Iran will line up in a narrow structure, preferring to keep the ball out of the penalty area and use direct balls and set pieces, so this game has the potential to become cagey. New Zealand will try to disrupt that by getting physical, keeping the pace up and pressing in bursts.
They will look for second balls and set plays, so this is going to be an interesting tactical matchup between Iran's conservative, low-block approach and New Zealand's direct, high-tempo game. The home side are clearly the stronger team with an advantage in the set-piece and an experienced striker line.
Betting angle
Iran should win, and the odds suggest this, but we can profit more by taking the 'Under 2.5 Goals' at 1.65 as New Zealand have scored less than a goal a game on the road.
