Football, WorldCup

Stephen Eustáquio ended ninety-two minutes of South African resistance with one shot, and Canada are into the World Cup last 16 for the first time. For South Africa this World Cup has ended.

Key facts

  • Result: South Africa 0-1 Canada, Round of 32, Los Angeles Stadium
  • Winner: Stephen Eustáquio, first-time strike, 92nd minute
  • Milestone: Canada's first men's World Cup knockout win
  • Shots: Canada led 12-6 overall, 7 of 8 on target
  • Next: Canada face the winner of Netherlands v Morocco in Houston on 4 July
  • Out: South Africa become the first African side eliminated in the knockout phase

How it happened

Canada dominated a tense Round of 32 tie but could not break a stubborn South African defense until deep into added time. Just before half-time Aubrey Modiba cleared Moïse Bombito's header off the line, then Ronwen Williams blocked Tajon Buchanan's rebound. Williams kept Bafana Bafana level again after the hour, denying Tani Oluwaseyi one-on-one before Mbekezeli Mbokazi cleared Jonathan David's follow-up.

The breakthrough arrived in the second minute of stoppage time. Jacob Shaffelburg crossed from the right, the ball was headed only as far as Eustáquio, and the Porto midfielder lashed a first-time shot into the bottom-left corner.

What it means

The win marked a first knockout-round victory in Canadian men's World Cup history. It also came on a day Canada became the first World Cup host nation to play a match outside their own country, having lost their final Group B game 2-1 to Switzerland and missed out on a tie in Vancouver.

Head coach Jesse Marsch had urged his players to reflect on their journey together. "Guys. Think about the two years we've been together," Marsch told them.

Canada's superiority showed in the numbers. They finished with a 12-6 edge in shots and put seven of their eight on-target efforts to the test, despite holding only 42% of possession.

Eustáquio was overcome as he spoke afterwards, choking back tears when asked about the recent loss of both his parents. "Canada says thank you," the interviewer told him.

For South Africa, the exit was painful. Bafana Bafana had reached the knockout phase for the first time, only to become the first African nation eliminated at the Round of 32 after nine teams from the continent advanced. Captain Alphonso Davies, the Bayern Munich left-back, made his first appearance of the tournament in the 75th minute following a hamstring injury sustained on 6 May, and immediately set up Promise David, whose shot went wide.

Next fixtures

Canada travel to Houston to face the winner of Netherlands v Morocco in the Round of 16 on 4 July. South Africa's tournament is over.
