Fire need to fire on home soil
Chicago Fire have been better at home than away in 2026 and they will need to be at their best to overcome a scrappy Charlotte side when they meet at Soldier Field on Sunday. The Fire sit seventh in MLS 2026 with 26 points from 16 games, while the visitors are 12th with 25 points from 17 matches, so there are some real table stakes involved.
Gregg Berhalter, who has been in charge of the Fire since 20 October 2024, has instilled a possession-first, structure-heavy approach on the team. Chicago want to play through pressure, not over the top of it, so they must control the game and move the ball quickly enough to create overloads in the right positions. Fortunately, they have the perfect predator at the point of attack in Hugo Cuypers, who has been deadly in the six yard box in the MLS this season.
Charlotte is coached by Dean Smith, who has overseen a more pragmatic system since taking over on 12 December 2023. His team are not going to play at the same tempo as Chicago Fire and they are more likely to sit deep and get forward in numbers on the counter attack. Kerwin Vargas has been a creative force from wide areas, providing three assists in his last five for the Charlotte and giving them a real outlet on the transition.
Chicago could just do it
Backing Chicago Fire at 1.51 is not a huge temptation given they have lost their previous two away games, while Charlotte at 5.5 and the draw at 4.4 are certainly big enough to be considered in this match.
The better home record of Chicago Fire and the shorter price point on the favourites does suggest they should just be able to squeeze out the win, but the better form of the visitors keeps this matchup from feeling like an easy wager. The most likely result is for Chicago to win a close but competitive matchup with both teams finding the net at least once.
Over 2.5 goals is available at 1.48, which is way too short for a matchup between two teams that average well below three goals a game in MLS, while both teams to score at 1.55 seems more appropriate as a wager that still fits the game script of a lively, open contest.
