By nurturing, Gary Andrew Pallister has been a Middlesbrough fan. Growing up in the nearby County Durham area, he initially went through Billingham Town’s non-league programme, joining Middlesbrough at 19 in 1984. Except for a short loan spell at Darlington, Pallister played for the Boro for the rest of the decade.
As a 6-foot-4 (roughly 1.93 meters) tall, he was the prototypical imposing profile for a centre back. He helped his club to win promotion to the second and first flights of English football, which was before the breakaway and formation of the current Premier League format.
His performances didn’t go unnoticed, with both the Three Lions and bigger clubs swooping in for his signature. Ultimately, Alex Ferguson (not yet knighted, naturally) convinced Pallister and Middlesbrough to join after paying a £2.3 million transfer fee, the biggest paid for a defender in the UK football pyramid at that time.
He joined them in the 1989/90 season, and this is where his legendary run began. His partnership with fellow titan Steve Bruce went on until 1996 (when Bruce departed), during which time United won 3 Premier League titles, with one more won in the following season.
Gary Pallister made over 300 appearances for United, won a total of 4 Premier League championships, 2 FA Cups, and even European silverware: a Cup Winners’ Cup and a Super Cup, both in 1991. In July 1998, aged 33, Pallister moved back to the Boro for a £2.5 million fee, making an addition 55 appearances and retiring in 2001, at age 36.
In his playing career, Pallister also earned 22 caps for the main England national squad, playing in qualification campaigns and friendlies across a 10-year span. After hanging up the boots, he transitioned into punditry, not to mention his input as a BetBrain contributor!
