Jermaine Pennant is one of English football’s most interesting stories. He’s had all the talent in the world, along with issues off the pitch that have hampered his potential. However, for all the trouble that ensued, he still carved an admirable career that includes over 150 appearances in the Premier League and a second life as a pundit.
As a native of Nottingham, Pennant had to overcome his environment, and football was a solution that he’s always loved. This is how he joined the local Notts County club, where he was just a trainee. For him, one of the peaks of his career might’ve come too early, especially because of aspects like homesickness.
In 1999, Arsenal’s scouts identified his talents and paid £2 million for a teenager who was no older than 15. He made some sporadic appearances for the Gunners here and there, but his first Premier League game was in 2002, when he scored a hat trick. Things didn’t work out for him at Arsenal, joining Watford, Leeds United, and Birmingham City on loan across the years.
It’s the last destination that meant a full transfer move to the West Midlands in 2005 for a price of £3 million. Despite several disciplinary-related situations, he played well, and Liverpool made a £6.7 million bid to bring him to Anfield.
His play under Rafa Benitez was good, including his role in the 2007 Champions League final, which the Reds lost to Milan. He had his up-and-down moments, including patches of really good form, but his downturn meant that he briefly joined Portsmouth in 2009, before departing for a year in Spain for Real Zaragoza.
Pennant returned quickly, playing a few more productive years with Stoke City and Wolverhampton. For the last few years of his career, he joined sides in India and Singapore and a few other low-level English teams before calling it quits in 2017.
