Ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has offered BetBrain his insights into the title race in the second half of the season following Liverpool’s draw with Manchester United on Sunday, explaining why the other contenders don’t stand a chance against the Reds.
“I think Liverpool have put themselves in a wonderful position; the squad is very strong, and they have good depth. I make them strong favourites.
“Arne Slot has just continued to impress as the season has progressed. He seems like a very articulate and calm guy. He has a lot of international players who have played in many big games and won things, which will help him immensely as he doesn’t really have to guide them. The likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk will be equally influential on the other players in times of need.”
Murphy was also asked about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool future following his abject display last weekend, suggesting the Reds will need some more experience in the right back position if he leaves in the summer.
Danny’s comments also come in light of recent developments that suggest a stronger chance of Trent remaining with the Reds. In Murphy’s December 2024 interview with BetBrain, he told us that he professed his believe that a big name like Alphonso Davies is a clear choice for a defensive bolstering, especially with the possibly high demands on Conor Bradley’s shoulders.
“I think it’s unlikely that Trent goes in January. But if he were, you would need some help and experience from a new player rather than asking Conor Bradley to step up overnight. If Trent stays, you would ideally be looking for a new centre-back and left-back.
“Andy Robertson has been great, but could use some rest days as there has been times where he looks a bit vulnerable. A new centre-back could also be ideal due to recent injuries to Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate.”
The idea of the Reds needing some shrewd transfers is something that has come up in previous interviews that BetBrain team had the honour to have from former footballers. Murphy then discussed the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City and what he thinks of their recent performances so far this season.
"If you look at Chelsea’s games in the last week or so – notably against Fulham and Palace – they lack a bit of game management and experience at times. They also have lots of long-term injuries, which will sometimes leave them vulnerable defensively."
"As for Manchester City, their performances that are still concerning me. They are really lacking legs and energy in the middle of the park, and that’s not the City we know.
“You shouldn’t count them out with the best manager in the world and some of the talent they have, but at the moment, they’ll be nowhere near the winners.”
Murphy was also asked what he saw in Manchester United’s performance against Liverpool on Sunday. United appears to be running something on free spins of the wheel of match day form at the moment, playing with house money in what is, essentially, a lost season due to its disastrous start.
“Manchester United are capable but what we saw at Anfield was a group of players who were hurting, under a lot of criticism and trying to fight for the cause. At the moment, it’s easier for them to play the bigger teams because you can be the underdog, but this will not work against every team.
In light of that, every big win in a compromised season and with a new manager is a no deposit bonus that serves as a confidence booster for the next campaign. However, Eddie Murphy doesn’t believe that the Man United situation is easily verifiable and has told BetBrain what he actually thinks of the team’s squad:
“I don’t think there is a short-term fix for them – this squad needs five or six players minimum in order to compete over the course of 28 games with the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal at the moment.”
