Former Premier League manager Gus Poyet has told BetBrain he believes Ruben Amorim must make the right decision when it comes to Alejandro Garnacho’s future, with the Argentine winger linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
“Until someone comes out publicly and says something, it allows everyone to weigh in on the situation – media, fans, staff at the club – everyone,” he said. “I’m a bit old fashioned, but I’ve been lucky with the players I’ve managed; I can’t remember a player ever coming out and saying something publicly.”
Poyet has also emphasised the off-pitch situation surrounding the Red Devils as a cause of concern that can turn into a distraction that works against the team’s interests. Atmosphere is not a no deposit bonus, but rather a nurtured element that can easily go sideways when making certain steps:
“I’m unsure whether Ruben Amorim singled out Alejandro Garnacho in the dressing room, in front of all the players, or elsewhere. But what I do know is that there is too much noise coming from Manchester United; it’s a real issue for football clubs nowadays and it’s been happening for the last few years. These kinds of situations are always best kept behind closed doors, rather than out in the public domain – I don’t think it benefits either side.
“Amorim has some big decisions to make this summer; depending on how many of those decisions he gets right, next season might look better or worse for United.”
Poyet was asked how important Bruno Fernandes is to Manchester United, and whether he thinks the Red Devils captain will remain at the club next season. Poyet added: “If there’s one player Manchester United need to keep, it’s Bruno Fernandes. The problem United face is whether he wants to stay for more years. Fans always look from the club’s side rather than the player’s side when it comes to transfers. I have no idea how Bruno might be feeling at United, but perhaps he’s fed up? It wouldn’t be surprising if he was ready for a change after how poor this season has been for the club; without him, who knows where the club would be?”
However, having a world-class player require a level of stability and direction. The prime seasons of a star player’s career may feel like free spins once he’s under contract, but time is ticking, expectations are high, and the player must feel like they have a reason to stick around.
Poyet summarises this: “You can promise a lot to a player before the season, and say that you’ll achieve this and win that. But, instead, the next season ends up being worse than the last!”
