John Aldridge: Szoboszlai is Liverpool’s best player

Blog

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has told BetBrain that Dominik Szoboszlai has been the club’s best player this season, adding that the Reds’ newest signings are starting to mould and come together as a team.

“Dominik Szoboszlai has been Liverpool's best player so far this season. Arne Slot needs him in the midfield, although he can put a strong shift in at right back.

“What’s inspiring to see is that the team is full of young, improving players; Szoboszlai, Florian Writz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Alexander Isak are all still improving and have prosperous careers ahead of them and they’re all starting to come together. I would consider this season as a write-off and one of transition, rather than trophy-hunting campaign.

However, there are no types of transfers that even a club like Liverpool can easily complete without a plan. Not many summer moves are free spins, but costly additions to squads that are in constant need of quality and reliability. Aldridge thinks that there’s a chance that more transfers may be coming.

“In terms of adding to the squad, Liverpool desperately need a world-class defensive midfielder. Arsenal did some great business to secure Declan Rice; he’s now worth more than what they paid for him and he’s proven to be a superb signing. Slot needs a player like Rice in the middle of the park who can support the defence and contribute going forward.

“I’m confident the manager and the owners will evaluate the market and make the right decision in the transfer window."

Salah, Konate and Robertson could leave this summer

Aldridge stated that there’s a firm chance Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Ibrahima Konate leave Anfield this summer, as their contracts near their expiry. Things have certainly changed over the course of the last year, when, in our interview with Stephen Warnock, the former defender declared that Salah will stay and continue his impressive production.

Aldrige considers that these players, while established in the current iteration of the squad, may end up finding new clubs once the summer transfer window begins.

He said: “Liverpool need to sign three players in the summer, but that will mean moving some people on to make space in the squad. Andy Robertson has been a fantastic servant to the club; he’s earned the right to make any decision he sees most appealing to him.

Each possible signing must be in accordance with the balance sheets of financial decision-making. Such transfers are far from being a no deposit bonus, and cashing in the value of players may be what can set things right.

Player movement is a standard topic of the BetBrain blog, and John Aldridge gives a very insightful thought on Konate and, possibly, Mo himself. Discussions around potential departures have also been echoed across the wider football media landscape, including platforms such as Tribuna.com.

“Ibrahima Konate’s situation will be assessed in the coming months; Slot might choose to cash in on him given his form this year. And finally, we don’t know what’s going to happen with Mohamed Salah; there’s rumours he might be heading to Saudi, so we could see the end of his era at Anfield in a few months.”
