Former England international Lee Sharpe says that he believes Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly should rightfully be Thomas Tuchel’s first pick to be the Three Lions’ starting left-back in a recent exclusive interview with BetBrain.
“Myles Lewis-Skelly has certainly come through and impressed. He’s definitely the number one pick at the moment to play at left-back, but like all young players, he needs to keep his feet on the ground and work hard and not let anything get to his head.”
At the same time, Sharpe pressed upon the idea that Lewis-Skelly needs to retain consistent form over the course of next season if he is to solidify his spot in England’s starting 11 at the 2026 World Cup.
“I wouldn’t say he is nailed on to be England’s left-back for the World Cup just yet – the major tournament is a long way away and a lot can happen between now and then. Like himself, players can come through and have blinding seasons and steal the limelight. But his enthusiasm and apparent love for the game will certainly put him in good stead for 2026.”
Moreover, good club form doesn’t necessarily mean instant starter status for the Three Lions. Trent Alexander-Arnold, an established player and former star teenage player for a top English club that contributors to the BetBrain blog have lauded, is the foremost example of this situation.
Sharpe added that he can see a lot of potential in Lewis-Skelly, and the youngster possesses many of the desirable traits that coaches look for in upcoming players. Certainly, an academy-grown prospect like him is a no deposit bonus even for a club like Arsenal, becoming an outstanding addition without any transfer fee.
“Myles Lewis-Skelly has got all the attributes you want from a left-back,” Sharpe said. “He’s an athlete, he likes the physical battle and getting stuck in. He’s got a lot of ability on the ball and reads the game well – he’s everything you want in a left-back.
Lee Sharpe also believes that what follows in Lewis-Skelly’s career is up to the effort that he’s willing to give. Chances to succeed at top clubs are all about pressure and are not like free spins to be without cost. As such, motivation is still impetuously necessary.
“His progression is down to him now. He has to keep this level of quality and stay hungry. He’s fortunate to be at an unbelievable football club with world class players to learn from, so there’s no reason why he can’t keep growing.
“Crucially, he has to stay fit. If he can stay away from injuries, he could really go far; he’s got a high ceiling, and it’ll be interesting to see how high he can go.”
