The two clubs are led by coaches with contrasting philosophies with Imanol Idiakez preferring a disciplined possession-based game in which AEK control the tempo with their midfield, use the full-backs for width and press in a measured way to control the game.
Pablo GarcĂa, on the other hand, has instilled a high-tempo, pressing mentality on his men, who look to play vertically with aggression and look to pounce on turnovers and turn them into quick attacks.
Home side have the edge in derby
APOEL Nicosia need a result here to keep their own Championship Group hopes alive and arrive with more momentum after their 3-2 away win at AEL Limassol last weekend. But AEK Larnaca have coped admirably with the challenge of balancing European football with domestic commitments and have continued their domestic momentum while advancing in European competition.
That could be a factor on Sunday as Idiakez may have to rotate his side a little and there could be some tired legs in the side. But AEK are a well-balanced unit with Enzo Cabrera and Riad Bajić providing good attacking depth and getting into goal-scoring positions regularly this season.
Djordje Ivanović was the goal-scorer for AEK in their 2-0 win at Ethnikos Achnas last week and usually makes his presence felt in important games.
APOEL have the power to play on the counter
Defensive concerns and form
Miloš Degenek is the mainstay at the back of the APOEL defence and brings the leadership and physical presence to that area, but the team as a whole have looked vulnerable in transition at times, as recent defeats show.
