Diriyah’s promotion is the fresh legs and the fresh minds
Promotion and recent meetings
These two clubs met once in the First Division back in 2021 and Al-Draih return to the Saudi top-flight with fresh momentum after storming the second tier in 2025-26. They then played out the play-offs in May 2026 with style and no fear, which should set them up nicely for this early 2026-27 Saudi Pro League encounter with Al-Hazm.
Form and tactics
Jalel Kadri's side finished the 2025-26 season in a win, two draws and a defeat sequence – beating Al-Taawoun and then being held by Neom and Al-Najma before succumbing to Al-Hilal. It makes for a mixed picture and Al-Draih's promotion push and momentum makes them the favourite to take the points here, but there is not much between them on paper.
Kadri's 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1 shape is designed to keep it tight, stay compact and hit on the break. Fábio Martins is the spark, providing creativity and quality from the wings or number ten position, while Omar Al-Somah is the main penalty-area threat. He was Al-Hazm's main penalty-box threat in 2025-26 and will be expected to outscore most in 2026-27 again.
Al-Draih’s style can suit them to take this
Bruno Lage's 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1 is much more front-footed and should see Diriyah get more territory and possession phases, which will really suit them against a deep defensive block. The Portuguese coach is a possession-first, high-pressing coach who switches play with a tempo and fluidity that should get his team into good positions.
Kadri's main tactical wrinkle is to stay compact and then hit quick, which should suit Al Hazm as this game may become a transition-heavy battle. But Al Hazm will frustrate and make it tough for the visitors, so the likeliest script is a narrow win or draw for Al-Draih.
A 1-1 or 1-2 or away win looks best at this stage of the season when both teams will be looking for an early boost rather than having to preserve points in the standings.
- Gaëtan Laborde is their top attacking producer in 2025-26 and should be the obvious danger man in the box on Friday.
- Aboubacar Bah and Elias Mokwana add energy and minutes in the midfield and should allow Al Hazm to keep their shape and break forward on the counter attack.
