Stylistic tussle in the West
Chongqing's approach
Chongqing have played some good soccer under Jianye Liu, who has overseen the team since 14 December 2025. The game plan is compact, counter-heavy and low-risk. Liu sets his team up in a deep, disciplined block and they look to hit with quick vertical passes and set-piece strikes, as they've scored six goals in their last five matches.
That makes them a hard side to beat, but it also means that they've not been getting enough ball possession to create as many chances as they'd like. Yuwang Xiang has been Chongqing's main outlet, he's scored three goals in his last five games, which is just about average for the team during that run.
Qingdao's approach
Qingdao West Coast FC come into this matchup with a similar approach, though they're a much sharper outfit and are likely to win this matchup. Zhi Zheng took over the helm on 1 January 2026 and has honed their compact, counterattacking identity, setting them up in a dense mid-block, compact spacing and fast outlet passes to spring counters through the channels.
The difference in this game will be Chongqing's desire to keep it tight and slow, while Qingdao will look to exploit the space in transition. Nelson Da Luz is a red-hot scorer for Qingdao, he has scored four of their seven goals in the last five. While Abdul-Aziz Yakubu is a livewire creator, he's laid on three assists in that time.
A compact cup clash
The hosts are reasonably defensively strong at home, where they have conceded just one goal per game across all competitions. However, they have won just once in that stretch, so it doesn't exactly scream 'fortress football' (D2, L1).
Chongqing's recent form in the CSL 2026 has been mediocre, but the draw at home to Zhejiang Professional FC and Chengdu Rongcheng FC, both 1-1, and the defeat to Liaoning Tieren FC, 3-1, show that they are vulnerable.
Qingdao's away games have been absolute madhouses, scoring and conceding three goals per match on average, so I'm going for the away team to win in a close contest and cover their lines. The score prediction to Qingdao West Coast, therefore, is the play here.
- Qingdao West Coast have traveled exceptionally well across all competitions, winning three of their four games (L1) and they should have enough quality to nick this one.
- Qingdao West Coast's recent CSL 2026 form is mixed, but dangerous, they have followed up a 3-0 defeat to Shenzhen Peng FC with a 1-1 draw with Chengdu Rongcheng FC, but they have won more than they've lost over the longer stretch.
