Cocca’s disciplined Atlas have the patience to frustrate América
Context
Sunday’s late Liga MX game could be a defensive masterclass as Diego Cocca’s defensively disciplined CF Atlas Guadalajara travel to Estadio Azteca to face Club America in a clash between two of the country’s most experienced managers. With both teams on 22 points, they are fighting for their lives to qualify for the Liguilla with just two games remaining in the regular season.
Defensive organisation
Cocca’s reappointment to the Atlas job back in August 2025 has brought his characteristic, pragmatic style back to the club and they are playing just the sort of game he likes to set up. They are so narrow that even their wing-backs are disciplined enough to play within a narrow block and are almost impossible to break down when they are set up with their low block.
Attacking profile
However, they do not score a ton of goals and rely on Luis Reyes’ creativity and the work of their two wingers to get them into the game when certain triggers are activated. Julio Furch is their primary forward, a target man who can hold the ball up and take set pieces. The Jalisco club will try to be patient, set up the narrow block and hope to counter attack, although that requires their midfielders to be disciplined in their pressing triggers.
Jardine’s América can unlock Atlas with a little bit of luck
América have a possession-based, structured game that uses a slow tempo to try and get around their opponents, using wide overloading to try and stretch compact defenses. André Jardine’s tactical acumen has been vital for América to rotate their squad in both Liga MX and the CONCACAF Champions Cup recently and it was his side that turned in their best performance of the season last weekend to get the 2-1 win over Toluca that they needed.
However, América have struggled with inconsistency this season and have drawn two and lost one of their three matches since that win. They lost narrowly to Nashville SC in continental play and it remains to be seen if squad rotation and fatigue from the continental schedule can be exploited by Atlas.
- Israel Reyes anchors the hosts’ defence, is excellent at set pieces and builds up the play for them from the back with excellent consistency.
- América have plenty of creativity, with Raphael Veiga the best example of a player who almost always starts and averages strong Sofascore ratings through April.
Under 2.5 goals is the play, but América should edge it
América are rightful favourites for this game, but 1.46 odds is the lowest that they should be for a match of this nature. Atlas have not won in their last three meetings with América in Liga MX, scoring more than one goal on just one of those occasions.
The bookmakers are right to think this is a big ask for them, but they are capable of frustrating América enough to ensure that this game is a tight game.
Atlas have not conceded more than once in their last five Liga MX games, winning 1-0 at Santos and drawing or losing the other four by one goal, with most featuring under 2.5 goals. So the Under 2.5 market at 1.92 is our main play here, although we will take América to nick it, perhaps by 1-0 or 2-1, with 1-1 another possibility if Atlas frustrate the hosts.
