- Head-to-head: Tijuana have won two of the last three home H2H clashes with Cruz Azul.
- Form: Cruz Azul have won four of their last five matches (L1).
- Home form: Tijuana have won both home games and conceded just one goal in Liga MX 2026/2027.
Another tight tussle is expected in Mexico
Club Tijuana and Cruz Azul are having solid, if unspectacular starts to Liga MX 2026/2027 with Xolos second with seven points from three games and La Máquina sixth with six points from their first three.
The clash looks like being a top-half battle in this 20-team league, but we're taking Cruz Azul for the win on Monday as the visitors look the value selection on the odds on offer at Estadio Caliente.
Joel Huiqui has done a good job since taking over as La Máquina boss on 24 April 2026. He's got a flexible system that can play with either a back four or five, but seems to have the right balance of players to press high up, be solid at the back and then hit teams on the break.
The visitors come into the game on the back of consecutive wins against Philadelphia Union (1-0) and New York City FC (2-1) in the CONCACAF Leagues Cup 2026/2027 and have also travelled well in Liga MX 2026/2027, winning their only away game and not losing on the road.
Xolos won’t roll over for La Maquina
Tactics and approach
Sebastian Abreu has done a similarly solid job at Xolos since taking over on 30 April 2025. He has made them a very compact team that are always in the game, but can be a bit boring to watch as they are extremely pragmatic, relying on a low block and the odd counter attack or dead ball opportunity.
Recent results
Abreu's men come into the contest on the back of successive losses after a 2-0 defeat to Austin FC followed by a 1-0 loss to San Diego FC in the CONCACAF Leagues Cup 2026/2027. But they should still be confident of at least a tie on home turf against a team they have beaten twice in the last five meetings.
Key players
- Jeremy Marquez has scored two goals in three Liga MX 2026/2027 games to lead the way for Cruz Azul, but Jose Paradela is La Maquina's most deadly player overall with four of his team's ten goals in their last five across all competitions.
- Tijuana's danger man is Moroccan striker Mourad El Ghezouani with two goals in three games for Xolos in Liga MX 2026/2027 and two of their four goals in the last five.
Tijuana should be more positive than recent form suggests
The head-to-head record between these two teams is very evenly poised with two wins apiece and a draw in the last five. Cruz Azul are the likelier winners on the form book and odds but Tijuana's home advantage and the balance of the recent H2Hs suggest this should be a competitive match.
Cruz Azul are a bit short on the moneyline at 2.1 and we like the Under 2.5 goals option at 2.0 a touch better than Both teams to score at 1.65, although we wouldn't rule that out in a tightly-contested game.
The contest will be one of structure and discipline against transition with Cruz Azul looking to close down the spaces and Tijuana hoping to nick it on the counter.
