Contrast in styles should lead to a good match
Tactical contrast
Falkirk FC and Glasgow Rangers FC are different sides with different priorities heading into Saturday’s late Championship Round clash at Falkirk, but both will be keen to take the points. John McGlynn’s men have been aggressive, physical and direct in their approach to games in the Championship Round, but Rangers have been more structured and disciplined in their build-up, vertical transitions and pressing.
Falkirk at home
In McGlynn, Falkirk have the perfect man to get the best out of his team in terms of intense pressing, direct attacking and overloading the wings, particularly on their preferred home surface where they have won seven, drawn five and lost seven in the Championship Round this season, scoring 1.63 goals per game and conceding 1.53.
Rangers' approach
Danny Roehl’s Rangers have been more about structure, discipline, control, quick transitions and calculated pressing. They are the superior side on paper and still in the championship race so there will be a little more pressure on them to deliver the result, but Falkirk will have plenty of local pride on their side.
Rangers rarely slip up at home
Key players
- Ben Broggio has been Falkirk’s most potent attacker in recent weeks with two goals in his last five and one in three Championship Round games, but he is not an every week player.
- Dujon Sterling is Rangers’ most likely outlet at the top of the line up with one goal in three and he is one of the few players in the squad who can be relied upon for a regular start.
Recent form
There will be an extra edge to this match for the Gers as they are coming off a three-game losing streak after a 3-1 defeat to Celtic FC and a 2-1 loss to Hearts Of Midlothian FC in their last two. Rangers have been less solid on the road recently, winning only one of their last three, but Falkirk are winless in their last two at home to the Glasgow giants, so history suggests the visitors are more likely to take the game.
Gers have the depth to outlast Falkirk
Rangers to win at 1.88 is still too short for us to recommend, although Falkirk are an even bigger longshot at 3.77 with the draw coming in at 3.8. Both teams have shown a little fragility in defence and a willingness to attack in recent games, so we will be looking for value in the BTTS - Yes market at 1.66.
