An Austrian power clash in more ways than one
Austria’s project club meets their traditional giant on Sunday when FC Red Bull Salzburg host SK Rapid Wien in what should be a entertaining Bundesliga fixture. The hosters currently sit second in the table with 18 points from 22 matches, while Rapid are fifth with 16.
Salzburg have one win, two draws and two losses across their last five fixtures, while Rapid have two wins, two draws and one loss, although they did meet just two days ago when Rapid Wien edged out Salzburg 1-0 at home.
Both clubs have new head coaches this season, however, so this is a real test of how much progress each has made in their respective tactico-narrative trajectories. Johannes Hoff Thorup has brought a more fluid, flexible system to Rapid Wien since joining in January 2026 that is based around a possession-based approach. But they can also switch up the gears and go direct when needed.
Two very different sides that should suit each other
Daniel Beichler has been trying to get Salzburg back to the high-octane, gegenpressing, vertical style that made the club famous since taking charge in February 2026. This should be a fast-paced game as a result with plenty of movement off the ball by both sides and rapid transitions.
Salzburg have the firepower to trouble Rapid Wien, but their home form has been poor of late, failing to win either of their previous two home matches. But Rapid Wien will also come into this game with a bit of swagger after winning the previous fixture.
Expect goals at both ends in Salzburg
Predictions and odds
Our selection for this game is a straightforward home win at 1.67, but the odds for over 2.5 goals at 1.7 and both teams to score at 1.67 are also worth considering.
Meetings, form and players
Salzburg have prevented Rapid from claiming a single away victory in their last three home meetings, but a lot has changed since then and the visitors’ away form is not all that impressive. A bounce back is due for the hosts here and Rapid Wien’s win in midweek adds a little intrigue to the game.
- Rapid Wien have big-game performers across the field and their stars have stepped up to the plate in the big games so far, especially in the win over Salzburg two days ago.
- Karim Konate has been Salzburg’s most reliable attacker, scoring three of their last six goals in five games.
- Frans Kraetzig has been the creative engine, assisting three times across the same five matches.
