- Form: Galway United have won one, drawn one and lost three of their last five matches across all competitions
- Head-to-head: Derry City have won two of their last three away games against Galway United and should come into this game in better form than Galway United
- Season form: Derry City have been the better of the two sides this season, winning one, drawing three and losing only one of their last five
Tactical clash could produce a classic battle
Standings and outlook
Galway United are seventh in the Premier Division 2026 with 21 points from 19 games, while Derry City are sixth with 25 points from 21 matches and look likely to take something from Tiernan Lynch's side.
Tactical approach
Paul Doolin's Galway United play in an aggressive and flexible system and have the ability to change shape and press high up, but they have lost their last three home games. Lynch's Derry City prefer to control the pace of the game, keep the ball and probe centrally, but to do so they need to stay disciplined and compact in the midfield.
In Doolin's system, the ball moves quickly and they can score a lot of goals, but they are just as open to be counter-attacked as they leave men forward, which could make Friday's game a classic battle at Pearse Stadium.
Derry City look like the better bet
Derry City won their most recent home game, a 4-1 victory over Bohemian FC, but prior to that they lost 2-1 at Dundalk and drew 0-0 at home to Shelbourne. They have not won in their last two away games, drawing one and losing one, but Galway United have not been in good form themselves.
So while Galway have the overall advantage and have avoided defeat in two of the last two head-to-heads, Derry should have enough quality to avoid defeat. Derry City have won just one of 10 Premier Division 2026 road games this season, drawing five and losing four, but Galway are in worse form.
Goals should come on both sides
The last head-to-head meeting was a 1-1 draw at Brandywell in Premier Division 2026 and these two teams are similar enough to ensure another close match at the Pearse Stadium on Friday.
Doolin's men can play with width and plenty of bodies in the box at times and Derry have some good attackers that should cause problems, so take both teams to score, over 2.5 goals and a draw at 3.22, 1.76 and 2.03.
- Kristopher Twardek is Galway United's top scorer this term with six goals from 17 Premier Division games while James Clarke, who has five goals in 20 for Derry City, is his counterpart for Derry.
