- Duisburg form: Duisburg have won three of their last five, including a 4-1 away win over Waldhof Mannheim
- Cottbus form: FC Energie Cottbus have won four of their last five matches, including an away win over Viktoria Koeln
- Previous meeting: Cottbus won the last league clash 3-2 four months ago.
Zebras’ bite is worse than their bark
MSV Duisburg (63 points from 35 games) sit fourth in 3.Liga 2025-2026, two places and three points below FC Energie Cottbus (66 points from 35) going into the head-to-head clash on Sunday. The Zebras can still make a late surge for promotion, but they will have to get the better of their rivals, who are on a two-game winning streak after the 5-3 thriller against RW Essen followed by a solid 2-0 away victory at Viktoria Koeln last weekend.
Dietmar Hirsch took over as head coach in July 2024 and has turned around the Zebras’ fortunes by bringing a methodical, pivot-based system that gives Duisburg a sense of structure. Hirsch’s team control the tempo and rhythm of games, attacking down the wings and pinning opponents back.
Duisburg are a fortress
Cottbus’ approach
Cottbus are the complete opposite to the hosts, with Claus-Dieter Wollitz’s men playing an aggressive pressing game, transitioning the ball quickly and using wide overloads to open up opponents and score quickly. Wollitz, who has been Cottbus coach since July 2021, has made them one of the most fluid and high-energy 3.Liga sides, which is why they are still in the promotion hunt.
Home and away records
Cottbus have won nine, drawn two and lost six of 17 away matches in 3.Liga 2025-2026, scoring 27 goals on their travels. Duisburg have lost none of their 17 home matches, winning 13 and drawing four, averaging 2.18 goals scored and 1.00 goals conceded per game.
Clash of styles promises goal feast
This is a tough call to make as Duisburg are unbeaten at home while Cottbus are very strong away from home. It is a matchup between structure and chaos, and there should be plenty of goals and chances at both ends.
But we are going to favor Duisburg here because their system is built to hold the ball and control the rhythm of the game, while Cottbus are more likely to break first.
- Lobinger and Engelhardt are our selections to score at any time because of their excellent recent goalscoring form, but there is enough evidence to suggest the over/under is likely to land on the over side.
- Our main selection is Duisburg to win at 2.67, with Over 2.5 goals at 1.54 and Both Teams to Score - Yes at 1.46 the two supporting selections for this clash.
