Sideshow at St Mirren’s home
Saint Mirren’s 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Premiership promotion/playoff final against Partick Thistle leaves everything to play for ahead of Monday’s winner-takes-all second leg in Paisley. The Buddies finished 11th in the 2025-26 Premiership with 34 points, a season in which they never really found a groove and had to suffer the indignity of going through the relegation play-off to avoid the Championship. Their form over the last three months has been patchy to say the least with only one win in their last five (W1, D2, L2) and Craig McLeish has had to make his players very compact and pragmatic to cover up many of the defensive flaws.
McLeish’s system has been based around Mikael Mandron’s target-man skills and physicality to hold up the ball and allow his two strikers to make runs off him. Mandron leads the line, providing crucial hold-up play and ranking among the club’s top scorers this season. Defenders Alexandros Gogic and Richard King have been key for St Mirren, offering leadership at the back and chipping in with set-piece goals.
Stick with the visitors to upset the odds
Tactical approach
Partick boss Mark Wilson has got his players playing a very organised and direct game, pushing numbers forward from wide areas and always looking to get into transition play where they can create overloads. Thistle boss Wilson will have his side coming out of the blocks quickly and the visitors will be looking to take the game to St Mirren early. The Buddies will have to weather the storm and try to score on the counterattack.
Key players
Aidan Fitzpatrick is the team’s biggest attacking threat, scoring the equaliser in the first leg. Ben Stanway scored in the Scottish Cup. The winger is a big, powerful runner who can get at defenders in a way that few others in the second tier can.
Match atmosphere
This should be a tense, nervy affair with a sold-out home crowd and a clear, mild night in Paisley setting the scene for a game that is going to be played on a razor’s edge.
Goals few and far between at Paisley
The bookies make St Mirren the favorites to win this game at 1.75, with Partick 4.51 and the draw 3.65, which is probably about right given the Buddies had the better of the recent Scottish Cup meeting.
Partick are on a roll, however, and won’t be easy to beat, even though they have an uphill battle to score. The BTTS odds are almost even, but given both sides are capable of shutting up shop at times, we’ll take under 2.5 goals at 1.79.
A 1-0 St Mirren win would be enough to squeeze into the Premiership, but the fact that Partick have scored with regularity in the last month and still have enough momentum to carry them through this game means it could go to extra time and penalties.
- Luke McBeth and goalkeeper David Mitchell are the spine of Thistle’s defence with the big centre-back heading the ball away from danger while the keeper pulls off the spectacular saves.
- Partick’s midfield has been controlled by Ben Stanway, who scored in the 2-1 defeat at St Mirren in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup, and he was probably their best player in the play-off first-leg.
- Back the away side to come back with a goal at some stage of the second-leg and keep the match close.
