It is difficult to call Vitesse a favorite at 2.4 for this opening round Eerste Divisie 2026-2027 clash with RKC Waalwijk at Gelredome on Friday, given that the visitors are there or thereabouts at 2.65 with the draw at 3.6. There is a case to be made for all three outcomes, but RKC's stubbornness in camp suggests the visitors can do enough to prevent a home win.
RKC's approach
The Waalwijk side have been stubborn and compact in camp, playing a narrow defensive block and using their midfield anchors and full-backs – Harrie Kuster, Daniël van Kaam and others – to stay compact and release their forwards quickly. Sander Duits' side have drawn with FC Volendam, Kozakken Boys and Jong AZ during pre-season while beating RW Oberhausen 2-1. There is a solid base to build on, but RKC still have the firepower to make this a very tight match.
Players to watch
Chris Lokesa and Jesper Uneken can unlock any defence on their day, while Tim van der Leij is one to watch in the summer window after a strong season in the Netherlands. Vitesse should be a lot more dangerous in the final third with the addition of Elias Huth, Yuval Ranon and Dillon Hoogewerf in the late stages of their own rebuild. However, Rüdiger Rehm's men haven't found the consistency to really make a statement at the back just yet.
Tight game should suit the home side
Vitesse have had a mixed pre-season, but they scored in three of their last four friendlies and beat Borussia Dortmund U23 1-0 in their last outing.
- Rehm's 4-3-5 system can become a 3-4-3 when they step forward and the hosts look sharp going forward, where Mathijs Marschalk and Marco Schikora can add a late-game bite.
