- Head-to-head: The home team won two and lost two of their four prior competitive meetings with Fürth in the mid-2000s
- Team form (Essen): Essen have won two of their last five matches in all competitions
- Team form (Fürth): Fürth have won two, lost two and drawn one of their last five fixtures
Historical clash for two German clubs
History:
SC Rot-Weiss Essen and SpVgg Greuther Fürth last met in the 2. Bundesliga of 2004-05 and they have an even head-to-head record from four competitive matches in the middle of that decade.
Play-off build-up:
The two clubs are heading for a clash on Friday night that is far more important than any of their previous meetings and the atmosphere at Stadion an der Hafenstraße will be electric if the home fans can get Essen back into the second division for the first time since 2007.
Essen finished third in the 3. Liga with 64 points and only just secured their play-off spot with a dramatic stoppage-time winner at SSV Ulm.
Heiko Vogel took over as Fürth manager in December and has steadied the ship, overseeing late-season wins that were enough to snag the play-off place in 16th with 37 points. Fürth beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-0 on the last day to secure their play-off place.
Furth have an edge, but Essen have the momentum
The odds slightly favor Greuther Fürth at 2.38 in the outright betting, but that feels about right given they are a second-tier side and Essen are only 2.65 with the draw at 3.65.
The game should be a cagey first-leg affair, which would make the draw a value play, but we are going to back both teams to score at 1.43 because the stakes are so high for both teams that the game is likely to be a tactical chess match.
Essen’s 2. Bundesliga return would be a fairytale, and there is a real momentum building in the camp after they clawed their way to the play-offs with two clutch performances.
Uwe Koschinat has done a brilliant job at the club since taking over in December 2024 and transformed their fortunes from almost certain relegation to promotion contention.
Furth can score but can they keep Essen out?
Fürth will be desperate to avoid dropping below the second tier for the first time in decades, so the pressure will be on the visitors to keep things tight and hope their clinical striker will get a goal.
Key players:
Fürth have conceded too many this season, so whether they can keep Essen out while providing enough chances for Futkeu may decide this.
For Fürth, Felix Klaus and Branimir Hrgota provide plenty of experience and good service to the striker, while Koschinat’s Essen have enough pace on the wings and enough discipline to press at the right times in their compact, transition-based game.
Both clubs should field their strongest line-up with no absences to speak of and a mild, clear evening in Essen should make for the perfect conditions for this matchup to be a classic in 2026.
- Noel Futkeu, the 2. Bundesliga’s top scorer with 19 goals, should be a major threat.
- Torben Müsel has been in great form for Essen in the run-in, scoring key goals, and can offer the impetus from midfield, but Koschinat’s men will look to captain Kaito Mizuta for most of their attacking creativity.
- The Japanese midfielder is on nine goals and 12 assists for the season and will need to be well marked by the visitors as he is the creator-in-chief when it comes to Essen’s transitions.
- Marek Janssen is a classic striker who has around 14 goals and will get his chances in the wide open spaces of Fürth’s defense in this clash.
