SKN St. Polten (W) vs BSC Young Boys Berna (W) Predictions

  • Team form: BSC Young Boys Berna (W) finished as the runner-up in the 2025/26 AXA Women's Super League.
  • Opponents: SKN St. Pölten (W) finished as the 2025/26 Austrian Frauen-Bundesliga runners-up.
  • Head-to-head: This is the first competitive meeting between the two clubs, so the Head-to-Head record starts from scratch.

SKN are the hosts for this Swiss-Austrian tussle

BSC Young Boys (YB) travel to the NV Arena in St. Pölten to face SKN in a tight game on Wednesday. This is an Austrian-Swiss contest between two clubs that had strong domestic seasons and were clear runner-ups in their respective leagues.

Both clubs are competing in Champions League qualifiers, so this is the 'second chance' that both sides have to make the group stages.

SKN have an established way of playing, with Laurent Fassotte setting up his team to control possession and build from the back, looking to overload the wide areas and get players into the box to create shots. They lost their first league game of the new season 1-0 to Austria Wien, but followed that up with a pair of 0-0 friendly draws before running out 5-0 winners over ŽNK Mura in a friendly to round out their summer of all comps.

BSC Young Boys come into the game in mixed form, beating Como 2-1, getting blown out 0-5 by Hoffenheim and edging out FC Ostermundigen 1-0 in their summer friendlies. Imke Wübbenhorst has turned this team into an organised, pressing side that will hunt for turnovers and will look to break fast via direct, vertical play.

Swiss side have the edge, but SKN are no walkover

SKN's strengths

SKN look like a strong side at their level and they showed that in the 5-0 hammering of Mura, who are a solid side from the Slovenian league. The scoreline suggested that they have the ability to take control of a game and put teams away.

Their Austrian league was the strongest that they have ever played in and their 2025/26 runner-up finish shows that they are one of the best European sides in Austria.

Young Boys and the odds

Young Boys have a bit more bite and energy to them and their preseason games show that they have some teeth. The 0-5 loss to Hoffenheim was a shock to the system and it showed that they have some areas of weakness against an elite opponent, although they did rebound well against Ostermundigen.

The Swiss side are the favorites to win this tie and are 2.2 favorites to take the game, compared to 2.62 for the hosts and 3.7 for the draw. That seems a bit tight to me and there is definitely an angle for the away win here, but the home field advantage and the single-game nature of the contest should keep this match close and nervy.

Goal lines and players

It will be interesting to see how the extreme heat in St. Pölten affects the pace of this game. It may play into the hands of the side that can best keep the pace up and take advantage of the extra breaks and substitutions.

The goal lines will be very important, as will the use of set pieces and the management of the match, so it may be that it is a nervy affair.

Over 2.5 match goals looks like a good play at 1.53, as does BTTS yes at 1.45. However, this could tighten up and both sides will be hoping that the other makes the first mistake as the one-goal swing will be huge.

  • Ramona Bachmann is YB's marquee threat and can be the difference if she gets a chance, while SKN have Ľudmila Maťavková as their livewire up top after her brace against Mura and Lisa Ebert provides a proven outlet.
  • Stephanie Waeber's return to the YB midfield adds some balance and new signings Josephine Bonsu and Leonie Köster add depth to this roster that may need to stay fresh for a European grind.
  • Alma Aagaard also adds some fresh thrust to SKN's attacking line after scoring in the Mura rout and captain Jennifer Klein provides some calm in the spine.
