- Head-to-head: SV Darmstadt 98 have won two of the last four head-to-head matches, drawing once, and they've failed to win the other.
- Team form: SV Darmstadt 98 have won none of their last five matches (D2, L3), with this sequence reading W0, D2 and L3 across all competitions.
- Opponent form: KSV Holstein Kiel have won only one of their last five 2. Bundesliga matches (L4), with that run reading W1, D0 and L4 across all competitions.
Close matchup between two decent teams
Darmstadt edged their way past KSV Holstein Kiel with a 2-0 victory on home soil back in November and that's one of the reasons why I am supporting the hosts in this Saturday's meeting at the Merck-Stadion am Boellenfalltor. In fact, SV Darmstadt 98 have won two of the last four games between these sides, drawing once and losing once, so they are the form team in the head-to-head matchup.
However, Florian Kohfeldt's side enter this matchup in poor form having failed to get back to winning ways against SC Paderborn 07 (0-2), SC Preussen Munster (1-1) or Karlsruher SC (2-1) during the past three rounds. Across all competitions, Darmstadt's form sheet reads W1, D4 and L5 over the past ten and that's kept the pressure on Kohfeldt, who has been in charge since 7 September 2024.
Holstein Kiel are having a more mixed-to-poor run of form in the 2. Bundesliga 2026-2027 season and they arrive on the back of back-to-back defeats, although Tim Walter's side appear to have turned a corner since he took charge on 25 February 2026. The Storchen have lost their last two away games 3-0 to 1. FSV Mainz 05 and 3-1 to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in Friendly Club Matches 2026, but their more possession-based and positional identity looks much improved.
Darmstadt have the bite to nick this
Odds & prediction
Darmstadt are a bit shorter than they should be at 2.15 against a Kiel side that are currently 3.0 in the outright market, with the draw coming in at a huge 3.65. Over 2.5 goals at 1.57 has a similar appeal for a lively game, but Darmstadt are just the better side and they'll benefit from the home advantage, so I'm on the Lilywhites to edge this one. The BTTS-Yes bet is a good matchup matchup at 1.48, as both teams have the bit to nick a goal, but we're going with the hosts to edge it due to their superior form and home advantage.
Tactical outlook
Kiel have conceded 1.80 goals per away match across all competitions, suggesting that they will try to control this matchup, rotate their shape to drag their opponents out of position and hit them on the counter. That makes this a midfield chess match, with Darmstadt looking to turn it into a transition game and catch Kiel in transition after the loss while the Storchen want to slow the tempo and keep it tidy.
Players & stats
- Isac Lidberg is Darmstadt's sharpest edge, netting three of their seven goals across the last five.
- Adrian Kapralik has been Kiel's spark, hitting two of their five goals in the same period.
- Darmstadt have scored 1.20 goals per home match and conceded 1.60, while Kiel have shipped 1.80 goals on their travels across all competitions.
- Kiel have conceded nine on the road, leaving them vulnerable to the counter.
