A clash of football cultures
Odds and expectations
The odds for Friday's game at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion are 2.3, 2.85 and 3.6 for VfL Bochum, Hertha BSC Berlin and the draw respectively. That's not an obviously incorrect set of odds, but there are some better options to sift from the game and Bochum are not quite as short as we would back them for this matchup. For a start, the hosts have the edge on the H2H record with two wins and two draws in the last four and Hertha are winless in their last two trips to the venue.
Tactics and managers
More significantly though, this is a meeting between two contrasting football cultures which could make the game tricky to predict. Uwe Rösler took over at Bochum on 6 October 2025 and has installed a dynamic and versatile 4-2-3-1 system which allows the hosts to dominate the ball in the wide areas and press their opponents high up the pitch. Bochum are a team that move the ball fast and play on the front foot, but they've also got the tactical flexibility to switch to a 4-3-3 when it suits.
Stefan Leitl has been at the helm since 17 February 2025 and has set up Hertha in a structure-first system, a 4-2-3-1, which sees them prefer to have the majority of the possession, build up from the back and dictate tempo. The Berlin-based side are much more comfortable, compact and patient as they try to pick their way through the flanks.
It’s in the transitions
This contrast in playing styles and the transitions between them should make this a very intriguing game to watch, with little room for either side to dominate for long periods.
Hertha are in a slump and have posted some uninspiring results of late, but they still look a solid bet to give Bochum a good game on Friday.
The former result was much more impressive, but the latter showed that Bochum can still be competitive against top-tier opposition.
- Their most recent three results have seen them lose 6-1 away to Arminia Bielefeld in the 2. Bundesliga, win 3-2 away to WSG Tirol in a friendly and draw 2-2 away to 1. FC Köln in another friendly.
- Away from home, Hertha's numbers across all competitions are positive, but the results are jarring.
- They have won three, drawn two and lost two of their last seven trips, averaging 1.86 goals scored per-game and 2.00 conceded per-game.
- VfL Bochum's form is much more consistent across all comps, with five wins, three draws and two defeats from their last ten.
- Their latest two results have been a 2-0 win away to Swansea City in a friendly and a 2-0 defeat away to Werder Bremen.
Bochum to edge it, but there’s a draw angle
Bochum are unbeaten at home across all competition this season, winning three and drawing one of their four matches. They've conceded just three goals in that time and have been very solid at the back.
The only problem is that Hertha have been scoring freely on their travels this term, which makes the double chance of Bochum or draw the best option in this matchup. 2. Bundesliga results are rarely obvious, even when the favourite is clear, and the value in this bet lies in Bochum's unbeaten home record. Hertha have scored, so they'll get chances in this one.
Both teams to score is very well supported at 1.44, but there is value to be found in the over 2.5 goals at 1.55. Bochum are fancied to edge it by the odd goal, but a score draw is the second part of our double chance bet because the head-to-head is 1-1 from the 2025/2026 season in the 2. Bundesliga.
