- Team form: Volga Ulyanovsk are 14th in the FNL 2025/2026 with 32 points from 29 games
- Standings: Chayka are three places behind Volga in 17th with 22 points after also playing 29 matches
- Recent form: Volga have won once, drawn twice and lost twice in their last five outings
Mid-table clash could be a tactical chess game
There could be some added spice to the matchup on Wednesday as Kombarov’s new project at Chayka takes on Belov’s more established Volga side. The coaches will be determined to claim the win to set the tone for the rest of the campaign.
Mikhail Belov took over Volga Ulyanovsk in June 2024 and immediately sought to change their on-field identity from a direct, limited side to a flexible 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 team that can dominate possession and create overloads on the wings. His tactical imprint is clear in the way the hosts press in waves and play in combination when they have the ball.
Belov’s team have been inconsistent at home, winning once, drawing once and losing once in their last three matches. A gritty 0-0 away at Rodina and a narrow 0-1 defeat to Shinnik Yaroslavl at home have set the club up for another season of mid-table mediocrity.
Volga may have the edge
Odds and form
Volga Ulyanovsk are clear favorites at 1.41 for this matchup with Chayka coming in as long shots at 7.95. The hosts certainly have the better overall form and the stats show they can outscore their visitors in this game.
Home and away stats
- They have conceded 19 goals in 14 home matches in the FNL 2025/2026 at an average of 1.36 goals a game, although their recent form has been mixed.
- Chayka’s away results in this division are a little shaky with two wins, four draws and eight defeats from 14 and they have conceded 31 goals in 14 away matches (2.21 per match).
Chayka tactics
Dmitri Kombarov took charge of FC Chayka in July 2025 and his first priority was to make the side hard to beat by setting up in a compact 4-2-3-1. Chayka will sit deep, use their numerical superiority in defence to create dense blocks and look to break through the opposition line on the break.
Chayka can still sting in counter-attack
Artem Sokolov leads the Chayka attack with nine league goals in 22 appearances so far, including four of their total of six goals in their last six matches. He is the best bet to be on the mark here as his side’s main goal threat.
Aleksandr Saplinov is Volga’s top scorer with five goals in 25 FNL appearances, but a home win seems to have the best chance of landing in this encounter. Volga will look to control the match but with both clubs finding goals hard to come by, the ‘Under 2.5 goals’ option at 1.97 is very tempting.
