- Newcastle are on a three-game losing streak and will want to end it.
- West Bromwich are in red-hot form, winning their last five matches and showing no signs of slowing down.
- Newcastle have been leaking goals at St James' Park, conceding two goals per home game.
West Bromwich to continue their hot streak
The EFL Cup is set to return to St James' Park once again as The Magpies face off against a West Bromwich side that have been on a tear of late.
Newcastle have not been in great form of late, losing four and winning one of their last five games, while the Baggies have won eight of their last ten matches, losing once and drawing just once.
The Magpies have lost their last three, suffering a 3-1 defeat to Everton on the road before a 1-2 loss at home to Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League group stage. They followed that with a penalty shoot-out defeat to Strasbourg after a 1-1 draw at home.
Matthias Jaissle's Red-Bull blueprint is built around a high press, the constant exploitation of narrow overloads, and a fast-paced tempo that should see the hosts dominate possession for large spells on Wednesday evening. West Brom, on the other hand, are built on a much more pragmatic structure under James Morrison and will be looking to stay compact and hit their opponents on the counter.
Stick with the Baggies
Newcastle come into this clash as the clear favourites, with a price of 39/100. The odds don't seem worth a punt, however, as West Brom are flying right now and will have a real go on the day.
The visitors will be a long shot at 27/4 while the draw is available at 7/2, but we're having a punt on both of these markets to keep things interesting.
The main selections, however, are the goals markets. Over 2.5 goals is priced up at 57/100, while both teams to score - yes is 3/4. Both of these selections look like value.
Goals expected in cup clash
This looks like the classic cup clash between favourites and the underdogs on the verge of a shock result. The hosts have the firepower to win this one, but the visitors are flying at the moment and it's hard to argue with them.
Newcastle's Harvey Barnes has been one of the few bright sparks in their 2026/27 campaign, notching two goals in his last five appearances and contributing to two of their six goals. Jimmy-Jay Morgan has been the in-form finisher for the West Bromwich though, scoring six of their 16 goals in their last five!
West Brom have won six and lost one of their seven away trips in all competitions, conceding just five in the process, while Newcastle are 2-0-2 at St James' across all comps, leaking two per match at a worrying rate. The away side could keep things compact and hope to punish the home side in transition, but Newcastle will surely force the issue.
