- Boro are the form favourites (W2, D2, L1).
- Doncaster have struggled at home (W1, D1, L3), scoring 0.40 goals per game and conceding 1.40.
- Middlesbrough have a better away record (W0, D2, L1) but have scored 4 goals in that time.
Compact Rovers to frustrate Boro
The stats will tell you that Middlesbrough have more of a chance than Doncaster Rovers in this EFL Cup last-16 fixture at Eco-Power Stadium on Tuesday, but we're not convinced that Kim Hellberg's side can take a clear advantage in South Yorkshire.
It's fair to say that the form of the two clubs tells a very different story to the odds here, with Boro 59/100 favourites to make it through against Rovers, who are 4/1 with the draw priced at 31/10. Doncaster have won two, drawn one and lost two of their last five, while Boro are two wins from their last three going into this cup clash.
But while Boro's results have been better, Rovers' performances have been just as patchy and Grant McCann's side are more likely to grind it out to get a result than impress. Rovers were 0-2 down at home to Championship side Wolverhampton on Saturday and then followed that up with a penalty shootout win after a 1-1 draw at Stockport County. They then lost 2-1 away to Mansfield Town on Saturday and look to be in the habit of digging in and hoping Billy Sharp can steal a goal.
Sharp and Lankshear look like key
Sharp has been Rovers' spark, scoring four of their six goals in the last five games, but the Yorkshire club need another finisher to help take the scoring load off him. Boro have been more clinical, with Will Lankshear on fire with three of their seven goals in the same period.
Boro have a much better all-round record away from home than Rovers do at the Eco-Power (W0, D2, L1 vs W1, D1, L3), but that is no guarantee of success here. While Boro have scored four times on the road in their last three, which suggests there will be opportunities for Rovers to counterpunch.
Draw can be made to land
McCann has been in charge of Rovers since May 2023 and has made the club a tight, compact side that is set up to make the transition from defence to attack quickly. Boro, by contrast, are very much a possession side with Hellberg, who took over in November 2025, using a back-three system that uses the wing-backs and half-spaces to dominate territory and pin the opposition back.
Doncaster are a much more narrow unit than Boro, either in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation, and will look to frustrate their visitors for as long as possible. Boro will look to dominate the ball and suffocate Rovers by pressing the life out of them, which will create the scenario for a classic cup tie where the underdog will have spells when they can stay in the contest.
The head-to-head is level at one win apiece over the last two clashes between these sides, but Rovers are likely to have more to prove after failing to win their last home meeting with Boro and winning 4-0 at the Riverside in the most recent away clash. Boro should have the quality to eventually win on the night, but Rovers have enough about them to get a draw that would keep the tie very much alive.
