Sparta need to shape up
Olympique Lyonnais head to the epet Arena, Czechia, as the slight favorite to get their UEFA Champions League qualification campaign for 2026 off to a winning start against AC Sparta Praha on Tuesday. Sparta are currently in transition and Brian Priske, who took over on 1 July 2025, still seems to be trying to get a few more things in place before he can lay claim to a true Sparta Praha playing identity.
Sparta are unbeaten at home in all competitions this season (Won 3, Drawn 1), but they have won just two of their last five, drawn one and lost two. This sequence includes a 5-1 thumping at FC Nordsjaelland and a 3-1 loss to Zbrojovka Brno last weekend – both away from home – so there is some concern that the Prague club do not possess enough quality at the back to cope against the very best away sides.
John Mercado, with three of the team's six goals in their last five, is the main danger man and he will probably be the home team's best chance of a goal on Tuesday. Olympique Lyonnais are the team in better form and arrive on the back of four straight wins with the confidence to show it.
Lyon can edge the chess match
Recent form
In their past five matches, Paulo Fonseca's men have beaten Servette 2-1 at home, won 6-3 at St. Gallen and beaten Wolfsburg 2-0 away from home. They seem to be in very good nick and, with Remi Himbert in blistering form up front, there is a ruthless edge to them that Sparta lack at present.
Tactics and betting
An away win looks the most likely outcome here as Lyon have better form, are more familiar and sharper, but Sparta's good home record suggests this is likely to be a proper match-up.
- In 4-2-3-1, Lyon line up in a narrow formation with a mobile No.10 and high full-backs while Sparta are more structured in the center of the park and look for combinations.
- This should make for a chess match in midfield, but Lyon's rotation, pressing and ability to change pace quickly should eventually stretch Sparta's compactness in a way they cannot.
- Over 2.5 goals at 1.83 and Both Teams To Score – Yes at 1.7 look good picks as the two sides should get a few good goals each.
