Styles and tactics
It is fair to say that neither side are going along at the same pace they did last season, but Den Haag have been far more consistent in their approach in 2026-2027 than Groningen.
Robin Peter has been in charge of Den Haag since 14 July 2025 and his side play a high-energy, front-foot counter-press system that is built around winning the ball high and fast and hitting opponents on the counter attack.
Groningen, on the other hand, have been playing a more calm possession-based game under Dick Lukkien's tutelage since 1st July 2023. The philosophy is the same, in that the team presses and structures to win the ball, but Groningen are more patient in their build-up, more disciplined in their pressing and more controlled in their style.
As such, this should be a tight but lively game in which Groningen's calmness and control in midfield should be able to withstand the pressure if they can break the press and find space in the gaps between the lines.
However, ADO's aggressive press could also get the better of the Groningen build-up if they can force turnovers in dangerous areas, so there will be opportunities at both ends and the way to play it is to back the goals to arrive.
Recent history suggests this could be a close game
One win apiece across the last two meetings with no draws is a pretty good indication that this will be a finely poised affair on Sunday. But Groningen won the last head-to-head 2-0 away in Eerste Divisie in 2023/2024 and ADO are without a win in their last home game against this opponent, so the advantage could just be with the visitors.
Den Haag's last five games has seen them win three, draw one and lose one, although their last two outings were a 0-0 home draw with Asteras Tripolis and a 2-0 away defeat to AZ Alkmaar. It is not the most convincing sequence and Peter's men appear to still be looking for their rhythm.
In conclusion, Groningen's superiority in the odds is perhaps a little misleading and we're going to take the draw in this one, but there could be some good goals in it.
