- Team form: St. Johnstone have won eight, tied five, and lost only two of their 15 away league matches this season.
- Home form: Arbroath have won seven, tied seven, and lost only one of their 15 home Championship 2025-2026 matches.
- Head-to-head: Saints have won two and lost only once in the last three Championship 2025-2026 matches between these two sides, including a 1-0 home win two months ago.
An intrigueing tactical matchup
Match context
Two very different, yet equally impressive, teams will go head-to-head on Saturday when third-placed Arbroath host runaway leaders St. Johnstone in the Championship 2025-2026. Saints lead the way with 62 points from 31 matches and their hosts are some way behind them in third with 47 points from the same amount of games.
Tactical contrast
St. Johnstone’s style of play could not be more different from Arbroath’s and that will make for an intriguing matchup on Saturday. Saints play with the ball, preferring to build up patiently, rotate the ball to find the best pass, and overloading the wings to create opportunities against deep defensive blocks. They have become a much more expansive and possession-based side since Simo Valakari took over as manager in October 2024.
Arbroath are not really a possession-based team and much more physical and pragmatic than Saints. Head coach Colin Hamilton has brought a high-energy style to the club since taking over in September 2024 that looks to press in waves, defend deep in a 4-4-2 and get in behind teams with direct wing play. The Red Lichties have plenty of set-piece threat and can be dangerous in transition, so the hosts will look to get at the more possession-based Saints as much as possible.
St. Johnstone’s class should tell
Saints are favourites to win at 1.78 and that looks about right. Saints are unbeaten in their last five Championship 2025-2026 games, winning three and drawing two, but they have drawn back-to-back games and have not won at Arbroath in their last visit.
However, the Red Lichties are on a similar run with one win, three draws and a defeat in their last five and are unbeaten in three at home (W1, D2). There is usually not much to separate these sides, but St. Johnstone have the more impressive overall away record and are simply in better form so far this season. I’m backing the visitors to win this matchup, but it could well be a low-scoring and close match.
St. Johnstone’s superior quality should ensure they are not the team that goes scoreless, so I’m supporting Under 2.5 goals and Both Teams to Score - No at a slight odds-on price.
- St. Johnstone are well balanced, but have been getting the majority of their goals from one man, Joshua McPake, who has scored 15 times in 29 league matches this term.
- Reece McAlear has been in good form of late with three goals in St. Johnstone’s last seven, so their attack could be more of a threat in this one.
- Findlay Marshall is Arbroath’s danger man with 11 goals in the league and has scored two of his team’s last three, so he could be worth a exact score bet.
- Both teams have scored 23 goals each in their respective 15 home or away Championship 2025-2026 games, suggesting that at least one of them will fail to score on Saturday.
