- Away form: Basel have won 8, drawn 2 and lost 7 of 17 away games in the Championship Group.
- Home form: Young Boys have failed to win any of their last three home games, suffering two consecutive defeats in the league.
Classic Swiss rivalry awaits with Basel visit
BSC Young Boys have had a frustrating start to the Super League - Championship Group, failing to win any of their first five games (D3, L2) and slipping behind FC Basel in the table. Gerardo Seoane has had to try and re-invigorate his team’s high-tempo, high-pressing style, but has so far not been able to kick-start the Bern-based side.
Sunday’s visit of Basel should be an opportunity for the hosts to put their poor form behind them in a classic Swiss derby. Basel’s recent form has been mixed (W2, D1, L2) and they may be vulnerable after snapping a two-game losing streak with a 3-1 home win over FC Thun last time out.
Stephan Lichtsteiner’s men are a more structured side, bringing a creative, inside-out approach to the game that is a bit more pragmatic and tactical. They look to create through the half-spaces, but have the discipline to sit back and counterattack if the opposition dominates possession. This should be a fascinating tactical game and I expect Basel to have the upper hand.
Basel are underdogs, but have a recent advantage in Bern
Betting and outlook
BSC Young Boys will be the favorites here at 1.91, but I will take Basel at 3.38 with a small stakes wager on the Draw at 4.05. This game could easily be close and the draw is always a possibility, given the sides’ recent head-to-head record and the fact that Basel have failed to win their last two trips to Bern.
The Over 2.5 goals bet also looks a good option at 1.31 given that the last meeting between these sides finished in a 3-3 draw just four weeks ago. Young Boys concede 1.29 goals per home match in the Championship Group, but Basel have found the net 1.53 times away from home.
Goals and key players
- Ebrima Colley looks the biggest threat for Young Boys as he has scored two of his team’s five goals in their last five games, with the midfielder top scoring for the team in the Championship Group with one goal.
- Basel’s best finisher so far is Albian Ajeti, who has one goal, while Benie Traore has provided three assists in Basel’s last five matches.
