- Team form: Arsenal have scored twice or more in each of their last five games, including a 5-0 win over West Ham
- Recent matches: Chelsea’s last five matches in all competitions have been mixed, including a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal (W)
- Head-to-head: Arsenal have won two and drawn one of their three recent meetings with Chelsea in the WSL and UEFA Champions League
Blues have it all to do after 3-1 defeat
Arsenal (W) hold a 3-1 lead over Chelsea (W) in their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final after a efficient first-leg performance at the Emirates, but the Blues have enough firepower to cause an upset at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Sonia Bompastor’s side are direct, attack-minded and full of confidence after claiming the League Cup this season, but they are coming up against a side on a different level of form.
Arsenal have won all five of their matches in all competitions since the start of March, scoring at least two goals in each of them, while also thrashing West Ham 5-0 in the WSL and beating Bristol City 3-0 in the FA Cup at the weekend.
They had no answer to Arsenal’s slick, passing game in the first leg and it would be a major surprise if they came back to claim a place in the UWCL semi-finals. Arsenal are in such dominant form that they would probably take the game to Chelsea even if they were level on aggregate anyway and the two English superpowers could be in for a real battle at Stamford Bridge. The bookmakers have Chelsea as slight favorites to win the second leg at 1.97, but Arsenal are 3.3 to hold on to their lead and qualify for the semi-finals.
Red-hot Gunners can make it 25/10 to score over 2.5 goals
Tactical approaches:
This is an interesting tactical matchup between Chelsea’s risk-taking, transition-heavy blueprint and the more process-driven, possession-based approach of Renée Slegers’ Gunners, who have kept the momentum of Arsenal’s European success going since she took over last season. Chelsea are direct, high-tempo and often overload the wide areas to create numerical advantages, while Arsenal play through the thirds, rotating positions and using the ball to create space.
Key players:
- Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, who operates from deep, is arguably the engine of this Chelsea team and is crucial to their transitions from defence to attack.
- Lauren James scored the equaliser in their 1-1 draw with London City Lionesses last weekend and is the main player to get Chelsea into the wide channels, while Sam Kerr is the team’s focal point in attack.
- Arsenal are equally well-equipped in the final third with Stina Blackstenius their big-game player, having scored in the 2025 UWCL final and last week’s first-leg game.
- Alessia Russo and Olivia Smith offer great support in behind, while Emily Fox can play as a full-back or in advanced positions. The Gunners are a little more solid at the back than Chelsea, who shipped three goals at the Emirates and need to make up a two-goal deficit.
Chelsea to attack from the start at home
The Blues will attack the Gunners from the outset, leaving plenty of space for Arsenal to counterattack, so we are expecting an open, back-and-forth game on Wednesday. Chelsea will have to go on the attack at some point anyway, so it should be wide open with the Stamford Bridge crowd making a charged atmosphere for this all-English derby.
Arsenal have kept several clean sheets recently, but Chelsea have scored at least twice in one of their last three matches and have plenty of attacking talent to unlock a defence that was opened up a few times in the first-leg. Arsenal have also scored two goals in each of their last five matches, making Over 2.5 goals at 1.67 the safest play in this game, while a draw or one-goal win for Arsenal is the most likely outcome to send the European champions through to the UWCL semifinals.
