- Prize: The winner of this tie will play in Scottish League One in 2026-27.
- Team form: Clyde have had a late-season surge, coming out of the League Two promotion zone.
- Tactics: Clyde’s Barry Ferguson has implemented a pragmatic and compact style.
Top-flight clash a massive carrot for both clubs
Clyde FC and Hamilton Academical FC will meet for the first time this season in the 2026 Scottish League One relegation/promotion play-off final with a place in Scottish League One for the winners up for grabs.
With the stakes high and the prize of Scottish League One status on the table, there are some extra ingredients to this game, particularly with the sides sharing a stadium for the last few years and having a local connection, but the focus will be on promotion and survival when the two teams meet on Tuesday.
Hamilton are the favourites for this tie at 2.17, with Clyde second favourites at 2.95 and the draw third at 3.34. The Accies finished ninth in the 2025-26 campaign, with 34 points earned but only enough to scrape into the play-offs after a turbulent season marked by off-field instability and points deductions.
Accies have the structure and Clyde have the momentum
Management
But Darian MacKinnon has kept the club on course through choppy waters and he has the tactical acumen to get the best out of the squad he has at his disposal.
Style and key player
The Accies play a structure-first style of soccer, sitting deep and compact and launching vertical balls to star striker Oli Shaw, who has 19 goals this term and featured in the 3-1 win at Forfar Athletic in the first leg of their play-off semi-final.
They are not the sort of team to press relentlessly or play at an extremely high tempo, but they do have some experience pros who can provide secondary goals and carry the ball forward when needed. MacKinnon has done a great job this season and the team he has at his disposal should be able to handle Clyde on Tuesday.
Bulldog’s have enough bite to cause an upset
Barry Ferguson has brought a pragmatic and slightly more aggressive game plan to Clyde, who have plenty of pace on the wings and have played with an overlap system that can create overloads and fast counters. They play with a pressing game that forces opponents to play in wide areas and they have been very productive at set pieces and in transition during the run-in.
The Bulldog’s have been in outstanding form with multiple goalscorers emerging at key times during the season, notably Scott Linton and Jordan Kirkpatrick. A 2-0 win at home to The Spartans in the play-off semi-final first leg means they will go into this final with momentum behind them.
There’s enough of a contrast in these sides to think that a close first-leg result will be possible, but we’re backing the visitors to secure a narrow 1-1 victory in this clash, as it seems a close game will be a likely scenario. There will be tension in the game, so set pieces and discipline may be key, but there’s a chance for moments of individual brilliance or moments of inspiration to win the game, particularly with both clubs set to play with full attacking lineups and no major injuries or suspensions.
