- Head-to-head: Hamilton won both competitive head-to-heads since 2022, a 3-0 League Cup win and the recent 3-1 play-off victory.
- League position: Hamilton finished 9th in Scottish League One with 34 points, securing their play-off spot with a late-season surge.
- League Two form: Forfar Athletic finished 4th in Scottish League Two with 50 points, earning their play-off spot with an unbeaten run.
Hamilton in control after commanding 1st Leg win
Hamilton Academical have a 3-1 advantage over Forfar Athletic after a convincing away win in the first leg of their League One promotion/relegation playoff semi-final. With League One status on the line for 2026-27, both teams will be desperate to book a spot in the final and secure their place in Scotland’s third tier for another year.
While the bookies make the home side the heavy favorites at 1.44, Forfar have a solid chance at 5.9. The draw at 4.25 could also be an enticing bet, given the hosts are unlikely to take their foot off the pedal, but I will be playing the ‘Over 2.5 goals’ market at 1.57 for another open and attacking encounter.
Hamilton’s Darian MacKinnon has led a resurgence for the Accies, a compact and energetic team that presses well. The hosts have found their finishing boots of late, and their 3-1 win in last week’s first leg cemented the fact that this tie is effectively over.
Hamilton key men
- Oli Shaw is the talisman for Hamilton up top, with his brace in the 1st leg, easily leading the scoring charts for the club.
- He has a great supporting cast around him, with Kyle MacDonald chipping in with both goals and assists this term and making a telling contribution to the Accies’ cause in the 1st match.
- Stuart McKinstry is the creative hub of Hamilton’s midfield, setting up goals as well as scoring them, he provided the assist for Shaw’s second in the 1st.
- Lee Kilday is the leader of the pack in Hamilton’s defence, captaining the side and keeping things stable.
Forfar players and tactics
Forfar boss Jim Weir is an experienced lower-league manager who has done a great job with The Loons this season, keeping them solid and competitive in Scotland’s 4th tier. Blair Alston and Gus Mailer provide the engine in Forfar’s midfield, with Mailer ever-present this term in League Two and Alston providing the creativity and leadership.
Scott Shepherd is Forfar’s most likely outlet going forward, grabbing a late consolation in the 1st game and has contributed several goals this season.
Forfar have been impressive this year, winning four and drawing one of their last five League Two matches, but they were overrun by Hamilton’s sharp attack and their inability to contain the host’s play could prove costly here. With a two goal cushion and the home advantage, Hamilton should have the quality to book their spot in the playoff final, but Forfar’s need to score early could lead to some gaps in the defence and their direct style may just see them nick a late goal.
While I believe Hamilton’s control of the game and clinical finishing should frustrate Forfar and earn them a spot in the play-off final, the visitors will give it their all and I expect another game full of goals on Saturday.
