Mexico more of a force under Aguirre
Mexico have been much more of a threat since Javier Aguirre took over as manager in July 2024 and his attacking, high-tempo approach should give Czechia a real problem in the group's second game on Thursday. Mexico have won four straight games across all competitions, including their 2-0 win over South Africa in their World Cup opening match on Tuesday.
Aguirre's men like to press from the front in a 4-3-3 formation with players that like to get wide and create space to play the ball into their strikers. They look an exciting team with plenty of pace and quality in transition and, if anything, can be more of a problem than the side that reached the Round of 16 at the 2022 finals.
Czechia can't be trusted to stay compact
Tactical setup
Czechia have their own tactical system that Miroslav Koubek has installed since taking over as head coach in December 2025. Czechia are disciplined and structured, usually playing in a compact 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-1-2 system with an emphasis on counter-attacking.
Key players
Ladislav Krejci is their main striker with a World Cup goal to his name already and he is a threat from set pieces and in the air, but Czechia can be turned over if they are made to play without the ball. Vladimir Coufal is the spark in this team, providing the assist in their group stage opener, and he is the key to unlocking this Mexico defence. But with Mexico pressing and playing at a high tempo, he may not get the same amount of time on the ball.
Mexico to outplay Czechia
- Mexico can be taken to win this game at 1.82 because they are in better form, have more attacking depth and have the odds stacked in their favor with the advantage.
- Both teams to score is very close in the odds at 1.94, suggesting there are goals in both sides at the moment with Mexico having smashed five past Serbia in a friendly earlier in the year and Czechia putting three past Guatemala a couple of months back.
- Mexico should be able to dictate the pace of this game with their pressing, but Czechia have enough of a structure to keep it close if they can counterpunch effectively.
