Press vs. Transition
Twente recent progress
FC Twente should have enough quality to edge a game of styles when they travel to Stadion Woudestein to take on Excelsior Rotterdam on Sunday. John van den Brom has been in charge of De Tukkers since 15th September 2025, however, his style of play has only recently come together in a way that looks like it can be a strong foundation for the club.
FC Twente have won three, drawn one and lost one of their last five games, a sequence which included a narrow home defeat to FC Utrecht, but they did bounce back nicely with a 4-1 win over Lincoln Red Imps away from home in the UEFA Conference League last Thursday. Twente score an average of 1.75 goals per away game in the Eredivisie 2026/2027 and concede 1.25, so they can certainly make a mark in the offensive third and are also liable to leave a little too much space at the back for the opponent's forward line.
Excelsior setup
Ruben den Uil has been in charge of Excelsior since 1st July 2024 and the youthful squad he has at his disposal are still very much a work in progress. They have a similar amount of games, however, their style of play is more of a 4-3-3 that likes to get the ball wide and get in behind the opponent's defence on the break, so this game of press vs. possession will be intriguing.
Aymen can strike
Aymen Sliti is Excelsior's top scorer in the Eredivisie 2026/2027 with three goals in seven games, so he is the livewire that can make the difference in the attacking third. However, Irakli Yegoian has been their best player this term, creating five assists in seven Eredivisie appearances.
Daouda Weidmann has bagged three times in Twente's last five and will be the most likely scorer on Sunday. Wout Weghorst, who has four in 7 games so far, and his size and strength in the box make him the perfect foil for the likes of Weidmann to feed off.
Tukkers can take all the points
Twente are odds-on to win this game at 1.51, so the value has to lie elsewhere as Excelsior Rotterdam are an unattractive 5.2, and the Draw at 4.6 also makes little appeal.
- Over 2.5 goals and Both Teams to Score – Yes both look like good plays at 1.4 and 1.48 respectively, but BTTS – No at 2.5 provides some upside as a single bet on the game as Twente may be able to win this one with a bit of control.
- Excelsior's home record in the Eredivisie is W1, L3 after four matches and they've failed to turn Stadion Woudestein into a fortress so far this season.
- Twente are W1, D2, L1 in away Eredivisie games and they look to have the quality to control this one.
- Excelsior have taken five goals at home in the Eredivisie 2026/2027 and average 1.25 per game, but they have been leaky at the back in their last few games, so De Tukkers may not need to score more than twice to get all three points here.
- The last head-to-head was a 0-0 draw at FC Twente in the Eredivisie 2025/2026 and this clash has the potential to be another cagey game, but FC Twente are more likely to edge it.
- Excelsior are averaging 0.3 goals scored against Twente in the last five head-to-head meetings while De Tukkers are averaging 1.0 when away in this fixture.
