Bayern won’t make it easy for Barcelona
Match outlook
Sunday’s second leg of this UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final is too close to call on paper after a 1-1 draw in Munich kept the tie balanced going into Camp Nou where Barcelona will be expected to book a sixth straight final appearance. The Blaugrana have dominated Bayern in recent meetings, winning four of their last five competitive meetings, including a 7-1 victory in the group stage back in October 2025.
Bayern's evolution
But Bayern will not lay down here with a domestic title in the bag and after an impressive domestic and European away record over the last few months. Bayern boss José Barcala has turned the Bavarians into a more pragmatic and proactive unit since taking over in 2025, although it took them a while to get their defensive organisation right. Bayern are much more compact and disciplined than before.
First goal could be crucial
They are still not as good as Barcelona at both of those things, but Bayern have shown improved resilience in transition and will set up to counter-attack while disciplined enough to stop Barca from building their play in the first half. But they will not hold for 90 minutes, so the first goal will be pivotal in this clash of contrasting styles.
- Pernille Harder, Bayern’s creative hub in a diamond formation, delivered a brace at Old Trafford in the quarter-finals and has the ability to unlock any defence, but Barca are so deep it may take a moment of magic to make a real impact.
- And we all know that Caroline Graham Hansen is a constant threat down the right flank, coming off a two-goal performance against Real Madrid at the weekend.
Barca have the depth and firepower to win
Barcelona boss Pere Romeu has maintained the club’s high-press, possession-based identity and added youth and tactical flexibility. Aitana Bonmatà and Laia Aleixandri are still sidelined by long-term injuries, but they still have the European experience and talent depth to see off the reigning German champions.
Alexia Putellas, who reached 500 club appearances, is still the midfield maestro in Barca’s 4-3-3 formation and Ewa Pajor, their top scorer in the UWCL this season with eight goals, can pounce at any time - like she did for the away goal in Munich. Barcelona are strong favorites to win at 1.1, but Bayern are big underdogs and a draw seems unlikely, so we are going for the Over 2.5 goals market at 1.24, which seems a better option given Barca’s attacking firepower and home advantage.
