- Form: Greenock Morton are in a dreadful rut, having lost their last five consecutive matches across all competitions.
- Arbroath form: Arbroath have won just one of their last five games (W1, D1, L3).
- Head-to-head: Morton won this fixture 2-1 at home in the Championship 2025/2026 season and are unbeaten in their last two home meetings with the Red Lichties (W1, D1).
Arbroath can nick it at Cappielow Park
Standings:
Greenock Morton are rock bottom of the Championship 2026/2027 table with zero points from two games while Arbroath are two places higher in 8th with one point from two.
Recent form:
The Red Lichties will head to Cappielow Park with the wind of a recent win in their sails after beating Stirling Albion 1-0 at home, but the two games before that resulted in a 2-0 defeat to Ayr United and a 0-0 draw with Inverness Caledonian Thistle. So the hosts could have a chance here…
However, the Ton are in a brutal slump, losing five straight games, including their sole home league game this season, a 1-0 defeat to Partick Thistle. The most recent result was a 2-0 loss at Stenhousemuir which only serves to confirm the dire form Ian Murray's side are in.
An exciting midfield battle is likely
Tactical setup:
Colin Hamilton has had a positive effect on the club since taking charge on 12 September 2024 and he has Arbroath set up to be compact, intense, and aggressive without the ball. They can be dangerous on the counter and they will need to be sharp against Morton on Saturday.
Ian Murray's Morton are direct, route-one and very transition-based, as the Scottish coach has fashioned the Ton into a team who like to play a 4-2-3-1 with plenty of crosses in the box. That should keep it interesting and turn this game into a proper midfield battle, but Morton's high line could be vulnerable if Arbroath's high press can be broken.
Market and prediction:
- The market suggests this will be a close game and it probably will be, but there's a bit of value on the visitors at 2.0 compared to The Ton at 3.44 or the draw at 3.24.
- The game is priced at under 2.5 goals at 1.7 and both teams to score at 1.82 (Yes) are also very tempting prices, so I'm going for an Arbroath win as they look the slightly more likely to nick it and are the more consistent of the two sides this season.
