- Home form: Oxford United have won one and drawn two of their last three home games.
- Away form: Watford have been defeated on their last two road trips.
- Head-to-head: Watford have won two of the last three meetings between the two teams in all competitions, with Oxford United winning the other, losing 2-1 in the most recent clash.
Pragmatism to reign at the Kassam Stadium
Two clubs with very different playing styles will go head-to-head at the Kassam on Saturday when Matt Bloomfield’s Oxford United face off against Edward Still’s Watford.
United, who sit 23rd in the Championship standings with 41 points from 41 games, are a pragmatic team, who have had a pretty good effect on the standings since Bloomfield took charge in January 2026.
His side set up in a 4-2-3-1 and appear to be disciplined in the defensive third, allowing them to be a threat on set-pieces in the opposition’s half. Oxford United have won five, drawn eight and lost seven of their 20 home games in England’s second tier this season and they’ve scored an average of 0.90 goals per-game on home field.
The U’s have won once, drawn three and lost one of their last five in all competitions, with back-to-back draws with Hull City and Portsmouth, providing little inspiration ahead of this Saturday’s game.
Hornets can pounce on hosts’ defensive weaknesses
Tactical setup:
23rd-placed Oxford will be looking to stay compact and force the visitors onto the counterattack, and they’ll fancy their chances of doing just that against a Watford team who like to play an expansive 4-3-3 formation.
The Hornets, who are 10th in the Championship with 57 points from 41 matches, are known for their high pressing game, vertical play and ability to overload wide areas in the final third, creating turnovers and then getting in behind defences at pace.
Recent form:
Still has made Watford a better away team since he took charge in February 2026, but their recent form has been mixed, picking up one win, two draws and two losses from their last five games, with a 0-0 draw with Leicester City and 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic making up the two stalemates.
Back the away team in a tight matchup
With Oxford United at home, Bloomfield will set his side up to be defensively disciplined, and that should lead to a tight game in Oxfordshire on Saturday.
The away side are likely to eventually find a way through in this one, however, and are our recommendation to take the win at 3.0, while we’re also going with both teams to score - yes in the 1.8 and under 2.5 total goals in the 1.75 market.
- Will Lankshear leads the way in the goalscoring department for United with nine from 39 appearances in the second tier this term, while Cameron Brannagan has two of the U’s last five goals.
- Luca Kjerrumgaard leads the scoring for the Hornets with 10 in 39 appearances in the league, but Nestory Irankunda has hit two of their last five.
