- Team form: Pumas UNAM are unbeaten in March and sit 5th in the Clausura 2026 with around 20 points.
- Opponents' form: América have dropped to 7th with about 17 points and have lost three of their last five in all competitions.
- Injuries and defence: André Jardine's side have conceded too many goals in March, while key goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagón is out for the rest of the Clausura with an Achilles injury.
Pumas can push América into the relegation fight
Pumas UNAM are in their best form of the season under coach Efraín Juárez, who has developed a team to play at a high-energy tempo with an early press and lots of direct play with quick transitions to attack. This is not a game for purists, but it has been effective with the team’s winter reinforcements and has seen Pumas maintain a spot in the top six of the table.
The Clásico Capitalino is likely to be tight again with América the all-time record holders with 28 wins from 62 meetings in all competitions, Pumas have won 14 and drawn 20. América are the bookies’ favorites at 2.2 with Pumas available at 3.0 and the draw at 3.4, but there seems to be a good chance for an upset on Sunday with the home team in much better form.
Álvaro Ángulo’s brace at home to Monterrey last week was the perfect demonstration of what Pumas are about with the striker the main outlet for their direct, fast breaks. But they also have pace and creativity in the wide positions, where winter signing Uriel Antuna provides a real spark for them - especially against América who have weaknesses at the back.
Ángulo and Antuna to trouble América’s defence
Recent form and fatigue
Club América’s defensive issues have been evident in their last two matches, a 0-1 defeat to Philadelphia in the Concacaf Champions Cup and a 1-2 defeat to FC Juárez in the league last weekend. They travel to Mexico City fresh from a midweek fixture, so there could be a difference in freshness on the pitch against a Pumas side that has found a domestic rhythm.
Tactical battle
Jardine’s side is based around the ball and is structured around a double pivot and full-backs pushing forward to overload wide areas. But their problems have come when they have not been able to play through Pumas’ press and early turnovers have put them on the back foot. Pumas have the experience and leadership of Keylor Navas at the heart of their defence and the directness of Guillermo ‘Memote’ Martínez up front to make the game a tough one for América. An away goal on a quick break could make it very difficult for Jardine’s men to recover if they fall behind early on in the match.
Crowd will give Clásico a buzz
Jardine has been under pressure for a few weeks with a series of poor results and defensive issues that have plagued the team. The club brought in Rodolfo Cota as replacement starting goalkeeper after Malagón’s injury and he has yet to show he is reliable at this level.
But the most likely result might be a hard-fought draw as both teams are inconsistent and prone to lapses of concentration. Backing ‘both teams to score - Yes’ at 1.7 is a safe play in this open game where both coaches will want to attack to try and get the three points.
- Pumas have scored multiple goals at home and are a better team in Clausura 2026 than they were last season.
- Juárez has shaken up his team a little over the winter and they look stronger as a result, so we are taking them to win or draw in this derby as América’s confidence is fragile at the moment.
- A Pumas win would put them in the driver’s seat for a top-six finish and pile on the pressure for América to keep up their Liguilla push.
