- Team form: Sturm are the form team (3 wins, 1 draw, 1 defeat from last five) while Hearts have been so-so (2 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats from last five).
- Home form: Sturm have won five, drawn two and lost one at home across all competitions, so this is a very difficult game for Hearts to get a result.
- Recent results: The Jambos' last two results have swung wildly. They lost 2-1 at FC Livingston before beating Arbroath 2-1 away.
Sturm have the edge in Austria
Hearts of Midlothian are the latest club to enter the Champions League qualification gauntlet as they travel to Graz-Liebenau Stadium in Austria to take on SK Sturm Graz on Tuesday. Both clubs will have to win a long series of two-legged ties to get anywhere near Champions League Group Stage, but even a first-round qualification would bring significant financial reward and a huge boost to their domestic schedules in the 2026-27 season.
Both clubs have new head coaches that have installed their own identity and it looks like this game will be won or lost in the center of the field. Fabio Ingolitsch has been in charge of Sturm since 1 January 2026, so his players have been playing his system for some time now.
Sturm have the system to make Hearts lose shape
Sturm's approach
They look very sharp in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 base, where they overload the wings, play fast and vertical and attack the second ball aggressively.
They have scored 2.75 goals per game at home, but conceded 1.38 goals per match in all competitions, so we should expect a lively game with plenty of opportunities.
Hearts' response
Wouter Vrancken has only been Hearts' boss since 1 July 2026, so he is trying to make an impact on his squad as quickly as possible. The Jambos are shaping up to be a more structured 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 side, where they press in an organised way and rotate more than they used to.
They will try to keep the pace down and keep compact, but Sturm's energy and wing pressure should force Hearts into errors if they get sloppy.
- Sturm are the clear favourite with the bookies at 2.25, but Hearts are getting a raw deal at 2.85 and the draw is a bit big too at 3.4.
- The visitors have a good recent record with six wins, two draws and only two defeats in their last 10 matches across all competitions, so they are a good enough club to at least keep this game close.
