Marseille the most desperate
Recent meetings and odds
A run of three wins and two draws in the last five meetings between these sides in Ligue 1 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 suggests a slight edge for the away team on Sunday. Angers are 3.1 to win, Marseille are 2.1 and the draw is 3.7, so the away side are clearly favored by the bookmakers and we must go with them in the result market because of the stakes at stake.
Current form and table
Marseille have taken just three points from five games to sit 17th in Ligue 1 2026/2027 and are already under pressure on coach Bruno Genesio's shoulders. The latest two results have seen them lose 4-1 away to Besiktas in the UEFA Europa League and 2-1 at home to Paris St-Germain in the league.
Angers have seven points from six games to be in mid-table obscurity in 12th place, but they are a solid unit under Stéphane Gilli and should be able to frustrate Les Phocéens with their compact low-to-mid block and counter-attacking style.
Gilli’s men can sit deep and make a game of it
That is the classic clash of styles in this clash because Genesio wants his team to dominate possession and play at a higher tempo with aggressive pressing and fast vertical attacks. He is yet to get Marseille to play that way and while Angers bounced back with a 2-0 home win over Troyes, they followed that up with a 5-1 thrashing in Brest, so things are a bit up and down for them right now.
Les Scoïstes are more reliable, however, and can make this close, but if Marseille break the logjam early on then the quality of their squad should tell. If not, it could be a gritty game with goals at a premium.
Our preferred play, therefore, is Under 2.5 goals at 2.25, but given Marseille's away drought, it has to be a close result to the visitors or perhaps a draw. Both Teams to Score – Yes looks good at 1.5, but our preference is to take the odds of Under 2.5 as the main selection.
Gouiri is Marseille’s biggest goal threat
- Gilli has a clinical goalscorer in Amine El Ouazzani, who has one goal in five Ligue 1 2026/2027 appearances, but he will need service for it in this game as Angers have scored just three goals in three home fixtures in the current campaign.
- Amine Gouiri is Marseille's most potent player with four goals in five Ligue 1 2026/2027 matches and two of those four have come in the Phocéens' last five games in all competitions.
- He looks to be the most likely to unlock this one if Marseille get going up front.
