Pivotal game in the play-off race
Match context
Two teams on the cusp of the play-off spots meet at Estadio BBVA this Saturday when Monterrey welcome Atletico de San Luis in a matchup that will be of crucial importance to both clubs’ Liguilla ambitions. Rayados are currently sitting in 9th place on 14 points in the 2026 Clausura with both teams three points apart.
They are just outside of the top-8 play-off zone with away side San Luis occupying 11th or 12th position with 11 points. Both clubs have slipped up during the course of the campaign and have been unable to put together a winning streak to cement their place in the Liguilla. Any slip up on Saturday will be costly for either team, and with both managed by interim coaches, the stakes are even higher.
Monterrey under Sánchez
Nicolás Sánchez, a club legend, has been in charge of Monterrey since March 2026 and has been trying to bring his defensive structure to a team that is more patient and prefers to dominate the ball and press in a structured manner. Sánchez has made the team more adept at transitioning quicker since he took over and his side has produced a few more high-scoring games as a result.
The attacking duo of Germán Berterame and Uroš Đurđević provide a goal threat, each has found the net in recent fixtures and can combine to cause trouble for San Luis.
Contrasting styles to combine
San Luis have an opposite style, they’re compact and sit deep when they don’t have the ball and look to release their two central midfielders, Juan Manuel Sanabria and Sebastián Salles Lamonge, in behind their forwards. The former is the team’s talisman and they tend to play through him, and he has the quality to produce moments of magic when he gets the space to operate in.
Benjamín Galdames adds some dynamism and ball-winning prowess in the centre of the field, helping the midfield disrupt their opponent’s rhythm. Santiago Muñoz is a danger man up top and can do things to hurt the opposition when he’s allowed to run at the defence.

Monterrey have the edge
San Luis pulled off a surprise 2-1 home win over Rayados back in December 2024 but have otherwise struggled to get the better of Monterrey in recent meetings. Rayados have won the last three of the four meetings and will be coming out on top again here.
San Luis have been patchy but have failed to put consecutive results together this calendar year. They recorded a 4-1 win in their most recent game and alternated draws and losses in March 2026. Raúl Chabrand has taken charge since the sacking of Guillermo Abascal earlier in the month and must steady the ship and inspire a late-season push to get San Luis in the playoffs.
The bookmakers are offering a very low spread, with Monterrey at 1.51, San Luis at 5.9, and the draw at 4.2. They expect goals and we do too, with Over 2.5 goals coming in at 1.62. This fixture is always entertaining and there is enough attacking talent on both sides to see an open and fast-paced game, but the bookies aren’t giving enough credit to Monterrey here in our opinion.
Sergio Ramos is the anchor in the back four, providing experience and leadership that has settled a defence down since his arrival. And in Sergio Canales, who will pull all of Monterrey’s strings, they have the creative heartbeat of the side, with a knack for the big game and an ability to unlock a defence from set piece situations. Luca Orellano is a top assist man in this league and has a way of getting to the byline and making the right pass, he’s a true difference-maker.
