- Head-to-head: Toluca lead the all-time series 22-7-9, winning the last three league meetings 3-1, 1-0, and 2-1
- Standings: Toluca are 3rd in Liga MX Clausura 2026 with 26 points from 13 matches
Toluca are too strong for San Luis at home
Toluca are likely to be too strong and too well organised for San Luis to beat when the defending Liga MX champions clash with the San Luis side at Estadio Nemesio Diez on Monday.
In Antonio Mohamed they have the most aggressive, pressing, and attack-minded manager in Mexican top-flight soccer right now. He delivered back-to-back titles in 2025, but what never changes are the high intensity, high tempo of his football and his belief that the best way to dominate a game is by pushing the game forward as much as possible.
In the last five Liga MX fixtures, Toluca have won three, drawn two, and lost one - but they also beat Pumas 3 - 2 away from home and suffered a 0 - 1 loss at Querétaro - suggesting they are not in perfect shape right now. But the fact that they are still third in the Clausura table with 26 points from 13 matches means the home side will be a major contender again this year.
San Luis will try to counter-attack
Manager and form
Raúl Chabrand has had two wins (including a shock 2-1 away victory at Monterrey), a draw, and two defeats in charge of San Luis since he took over from the dismissed Guillermo Abascal in late March. He’s had an inconsistent spell of fixtures and the team’s form hasn’t been much better, but there are some signs of stability returning to the side.
Tactics
The Red and Whites usually line up in a 4-2-3-1 with a double pivot and, when they can, will look to get the ball wide and feed the strikers down the middle. The double pivot also ensures there is structure in the first phase of possession and counter-attacks as they look to punish the opposition when they press.
Match outlook
San Luis’s recent results show a lack of consistency, which could go either way in this fixture. But Mohamed’s ability to mix up his system and his team’s attacking depth should give Toluca the edge on this occasion. Helinho is a great playmaker and end-to-end player who is always a threat to score or assist.
Paulinho is the main man for Toluca
San Luis can still rely on the prolific João Pedro to score goals as he is in pursuit of the Golden Boot with nine to ten goals this Clausura - making him their main attacking threat. Defenders Román Torres and Juanpe are a pretty good base to build from but both will be tested by Toluca’s high-pressing attack.
The home team have scored multiple goals in four of their last five Liga MX matches and should dominate possession and chances in this clash. Marcel Ruíz, Toluca’s engine room and creative hub, is out with a season-ending ACL injury, forcing tactical adjustments for the hosts.
Backing Toluca to win this one at their low odds isn’t the best play, but there is enough on the line for the defending champions to push to make a statement with a win that should confirm their top-four status. San Luis could mix things up by pulling an upset and putting themselves back in the playoff picture, but we will take Toluca to come out on top.
