- Home record: Spartak Moscow have won 8 of their 12 home games this season, drawing 3 and losing only 1.
- Away record: Akhmat Grozny have won only 1 of their 12 away games in the Premier League 2025/2026, drawing 6 and losing 5.
Spartak’s system versus Akhmat’s counterplay
Spartak Moscow are in much better form than FC Akhmat Grozny going into the head-to-head clash of two teams with different approaches to the game this weekend. Spartak, who sit sixth in the Premier League 2025/2026 table with 42 points from 24 games, are unbeaten in their last five in all competitions, winning four and drawing one. Akhmat, who are ninth with 31 points, have won one, drawn three and lost one of their last five.
Spartak boss Juan Carlos Carcedo has installed a solid structure and possession-based system since taking over in January 2026. His 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 system morphs into overloads when in possession and his team are much more controlled in their tempo and pressing patterns, which have become more coordinated in the medium to high ranges. This system has made Spartak a tough team to beat and they have won consecutive home matches in the league, although they have failed to beat Akhmat in their last two at Otkritie Arena.
Cherchesov’s pragmatic approach
Tactical reset and defensive shape
Stanislav Cherchesov has performed a pragmatic and disciplined tactical reset at Akhmat since returning to the club in August 2025. His 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 hybrids are designed to absorb pressure, contain the opposition and get bodies behind the ball to spring the team into life on the counter-attack or from set pieces. This approach has made Akhmat compact, but they have been far more vulnerable away, averaging 1.08 goals scored and 1.58 goals conceded on their travels in the Russian top flight.
Key players and goal threats
- Maxim Samorodov has been the main creative force for Akhmat of late, producing three assists in their last five games, while Georgi Melkadze is in a hot streak, scoring two in five.
- But Akhmat’s main goal threat is the powerful Egas Cacintura, who has scored eight in 22 Premier League games, more than any other team-mate, and likes to pounce on the break.
Free-flowing game likely
Spartak are rightly favourites at 1.58 for a home win here, but with Akhmat drawing all of their last three away matches, we prefer the bet on both teams to score at 1.85. We also believe Carcedo’s possession play will be able to pick holes in Cherchesov’s low block, while Akhmat’s threat on the break and set pieces should ensure this is a relatively free-flowing clash.
A home victory with both sides scoring and a few goals is our prediction with odds of 1.86 for over 2.5 goals. The last three meetings of these two clubs have resulted in one win to Spartak, no wins to Akhmat and two draws, with Spartak winning the last meeting 2-1 away five months ago.
