- Team form: Forfar have the momentum to take into this first leg, unbroken in six games in all competitions after winning four and tying one of their last five.

- Top scorer: Oli Shaw leads the line for Hamilton, the top scorer in League One.
All to play for at Station Park
Hamilton Academical are the favorites to defeat League Two side Forfar Athletic in the first leg of their promotion-relegation playoff semi-final, but the home side will give them a run for their money in a competitive contest on Tuesday.
The Accies finished 9th in 2025-26 League One with 34 points after a turbulent campaign which included points deductions and a period of off-field instability which has only just been resolved. Forfar finished 4th in League Two with 50 points. Both sides qualified for the League One play-offs, which they are contesting this week.
Accies have quality, but the Loons are on a high
Manager and tactics
Darian MacKinnon has done a good job to steady the ship at New Douglas Park during a difficult period, using his side’s tactical flexibility to make best use of the individual talent he has at his disposal.
Hamilton’s last five matches in all competitions include three wins, with defeats either side, which illustrates their inconsistency well, but also shows their ability to bounce back from setbacks. The Accies hold a dominant record in this fixture, beating the Loons 3-0 in the League Cup in July 2022 and a string of big results in earlier meetings.
Forfar's form and style
However, Forfar are on a roll right now, collecting 13 points from their last five games and finding the net at will, particularly at home.
Jim Weir’s men are a pragmatic side, compact, well-organised and very dangerous on the counter-attack and set pieces, with a squad capable of making the most of these situations rather than always dominating possession.
Back the over and the away side
Forfar’s recent form includes a 4-0 thrashing of Edinburgh City and a 1-1 away draw at Annan, results which show both their tenacity and attacking confidence. Martin Rennie has been in particularly good form up front for the home team, but Scott Shepherd and Jake Sutherland also provide an attacking threat and the team have shared the goals around well in recent weeks.
Hamilton’s superior individual quality could be the difference between these two teams, but the tight atmosphere at Station Park and Forfar’s home form could be enough to level the tie going into the second leg.
- MacKinnon’s side are good value at 1.72, while Forfar are 4.99 and the draw is 3.4.
- Backing the over 2.5 goals market at 1.65 is probably the best way to go, as there will be chances at both ends and Shaw will always be a threat to score.
- Hamilton also have Championship-level experience in Kevin MacDonald and Kyle O’Hara in the squad, who could both provide secondary scoring options to give the visitors a bit more depth and flexibility in this tactical battle.
